*sighs*

My problem is with your phrasing. Not your opinion. To make it simple for you: you sound like a troll. You sound like you want to rub a load of people up the wrong way, get them chomping at the bit and massing together with cries of 'you're wrong!' either for a sick sense of amusement as you watch them expend their energies in a useless attempt to change your mind/prove you wrong, or you're wielding some sort of badly aimed preemptive strike because you know you opinion isn't the same as the majority, and that makes you so very special and put-upon.

I'll repeat: You don't like the film? That's cool, I've got no problem with that. You feel like expressing this sentiment in an open forum? Also cool, freedom of speech and all that. You feel like harshly insulting both the film and the people who did enjoy it without any balanced arguments? Now you've lost me. And now you're edgy.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
edgy

You keep using that word... I do not think it means what you think it means.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=edgy

Top definition. Also note my use of italics, indicating sarcasm.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
mayhaps you should have used the <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags.

Ooo.... URBAN DICTIONARY! you're so edgy. can I go to Edgy School so I can be just like you?

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I only linked there because ED doesn't have an article on it, just a lot of articles using the word. In exactly the same context I was using it. I thought it would easier for you if I had a solid site to link to, rather than trying to explain the concept myself. And UD isn't edgy in the slightest, it's old and everyone know about it. Lol.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)

see, italics just DON'T convey sarcasm correctly. the <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags are a better option

The point, you have missed it by approximately six billion degrees.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't know what's funnier: the fact that you think i missed the point... or, the fact that YOU missed the point ~_o

[identity profile] miarr.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Making a non sequitur Princess Bride reference is not, in and of itself, a point.

2. Seeing as the discussion is about the phrasing of [livejournal.com profile] realcdaae's original comment and not, in fact, about the definition of the word 'edgy', it seems as though... nope, you're still missing the point.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
x_x - you're still missing the point.

and, it had nothing to do with The Princess Bride.

don't worry. keep trying. you'll get it.

or you're wielding some sort of badly aimed preemptive strike because you know you opinion isn't the same as the majority, and that makes you so very special and put-upon.

Either you are understandably cynical from many years on the internet, or you're projecting. I don't think I'm special or put-upon when I think something popular is crap; I just don't feel the need not to say what I think because other people might be butthurt over it. "Harshly insulting" a film does not make someone a troll. As for "harshly insulting" the people who enjoyed it, no. If I'd said "I think the people who loved this movie must be cretins with no inkling of what makes a good movie, and are probably the same kind of people who think McDonald's food is equal to five star cuisine", that would be harshly insulting them (and no, I don't think that).

If my intention had been to post a thoughtful review or "balanced argument" I would have pointed to various aspects of the movie which I thought were crap. My intention wasn't to post a thoughtful review, it was just a brief rant in reaction to the huge numbers of secrets over the past week from people loving the movie, employing a similar degree of hyperbole.

If I'd actually wanted to be obnoxious and cause trouble, I would have gone through and replied to the comments by all the people who loved the movie telling them what I thought.

now, THAT is a fantastic notion. why didn't I think of that?

[identity profile] miarr.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
My theory is that they've been lacing the soft drinks at cinemas with E or crack, and the rest of you have been drinking it, because WHY SO FUCKING SERIOUSLY OVERRATED, YOU GUYS???

Phrasing your insult as a question does not make it any less of an insult. I realize it may not have been your intent, which is nice, but questioning someone's taste by saying "what the hell, are you on drugs?" can't really be interpreted as anything other than condescending. I honestly have no beef with you, I'm just pointing out that the internet requires a certain measure of tact which the original comment was lacking. Your subsequent posts were much better phrased.

I guess I disagree that the internet requires tact. What I said here is the same as what I said when chatting about the movie afterwards with my neighbours (we were split half and half between those who thought it was great, and those who thought it was crap). Their response was pretty much just "ha ha, you wasted ten quid, sucks to be you".

I think of F!S as more akin to a conversation down the pub than a forum for serious review.

[identity profile] miarr.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically, the internet doesn't require anything, aside from a functioning computer and a connection. I suppose it'd be more accurate to say that tact is required in forum discussions as a prerequisite to not being considered a troll. Obviously not all people on the internet consider F!S a figurative pub, and as a gesture of respect towards these people, one might consider talking to them not as if they were one's neighbours, but as if they were strangers. Which, in fact, they are. With neighbours or friends, mockery can take on an affectionate tone; strangers do not have that added affinity, and interpret mockery for what it is: derision.

I'm not saying it's horrible to take up a casual tone of voice in public forums, but be aware that your words may be interpreted by people who aren't nearly so fraternal, and who might take them at face value.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You said that anyone who enjoyed it must have also enjoyed drugged beverages from the cinema. Implying not only that drugs were needed to enjoy the film, but that there was some sort of mass brainwashing going on, unnoticed, amongst the viewers - and that you were exempt from this, being so much better than the rest of us plebes.

Maybe this was not your intention. It's still the way you came across. Communication is a matter of connotations and interpretation, especially in a text-only forum. I found your comment to be unnecessarily antagonistic, as I previously stated. No, harshly insulting a film does not make you a troll.

Stating a dissenting statement in a forum using antagonistic phrasing, however, is pretty much the definition of a troll.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I did do drugs while watching it. And, it still sucked anus.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I was exempt from it because I didn't have a coke.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-03 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I also didn't have a coke. Or anything else bought from a cinema. Because they're money hungry cunts who make so much profit on popcorn sales that they shouldn't need to have ticket prices so high or employee wages so low. Not that I had my soul crushed by working for an international chain or anything.

I digress - I also didn't have a coke, nor was I on any substances voluntarily. But I did enjoy the film, a lot.
