I like Reid very much, but prefer episodes where he's not the main focus. I think he works best as a supporting character, and not the (usually) super emo protagonist.

Yeah, I think you're right. I enjoy seeing him be his geeky, quirky self (magic tricks, anyone?) rather than being that sad guy who gets kidnapped and addicted to drugs, etc. etc.

I like him being funny and geeky. I also really enjoyed him being the parent to his mom. For a time he was good at that and I really related because I was parent to my ill parents as they died.

But I could really, really do without him being emo and kidnapped and drug addicted. They made him the focus of too much of that bs and it made me lose interest in the show.

Yeah, I'd love to see him have some happier storylines, too. I like some of the more emotional situations he's been through-some of those moments have been quite poignant and touching, like your mention of his struggles with his mom (and I too can sympathize with that situation some)..

...but yeah, I think it's well past time for him to get a good, long break from the pain and misery stuff. It'd be cool to see him having some sort of notable professional or personal success for a change.
