They really were, what's more confusing is that it was framed as a 'good' moment and no? If not death by bear then death by hypothermia.

I guess it was meant to be proof that life was possible outside of the train. If there's a high order predator, then there's a whole lot of other animals to munch on.

But humans are not bears. Especially humans who were raised in trains and probably don't know how the fuck to do outdoor activities.
