Re: Is anyone still here? TMI medical question

So, I've had what has become a giant boil on my inner thigh for the past few weeks (actually multiple boils, but one giant one in middle). It finally popped itself tonight. I've cleaned out as much as I could, used disinfectant soap and water, and put gauze on it overnight.

My mother suggested I should stop at on of those urgent care centers tomorrow and have them look at it and get an antibiotic.

is this a thing I should do? I've followed all the steps that you are supposed to for boils. But I guess just because of the size of the thing she's worried about further infection.

How big would you say it is? Did the boil pop in just one point or did the skin covering the whole thing break and/or peel off? Is your immune system compromised in any way (illness, medication, etc.)? Are you prone to getting infections from open wounds? Would your living/working conditions let you keep the healing wound clean and protected?

If you are in reasonably good health and the open wound is not too big, I'd say go on with your life. Keep some disinfectant and gauze on hand, check it every now and then, and if you notice something's wrong that's outside of your capabilities, that's when I'd recommend getting treatment. If it starts hurting worse than a freshly popped boil should, if the area around it looks red or inflamed and feels hot to the touch, if you start running a fever... then definitely seek help.

I get boils in my inner thighs regularly, the largest of them about the size of my fingertip, and I've never needed professional care or antibiotics. A couple of times I've had a boil fill again (I guess I didn't drain it properly) but the infection didn't spread and it popped faster since the skin had already opened once and was still only scabbed over.

Uh, pretty big, and it went in pretty deep. I'd say a little smaller than the size of my palm. It popped at two points. I don't think my immune system is compromised.

The only thing that worries me is the size and the fact that it still hurts a lot.

Had a boil before, just never one this big.

Yikes. I think with a boil that big, seeing a doctor is a very good idea. Antibiotics will speed the healing, and quite frankly, if it's that large and deep there might be pockets of infection that regular disinfectant can't reach.

Yeah, agreed. Deeper boils tend to cause more trouble, and something that size could easily be hiding stuff or get infected again.

Yikes. I’d say a nurse or doc and some antibiotics are definitely called for; the biggest one I ever had was a bit smaller than a dime. That sounds painful.

It might be a carbuncle, a cluster of boils connected under the skin, and that can be a little more serious than your average boil. It would be a good idea to have medical personnel check that it is completely drained and that infection hasn't spread.
