I just have a different set of standards for fics than I do for published works. Kinda like how if you're grading an eighth grader's paper and a twelfth grader's paper, you wouldn't grade them both on the same rubric.

Same, though there's actually a lot more overlap between published quality and fanfic quality than history snob up there would like to admit. /English PhD who feels like getting out the credentials today

Preach! I also have a different set of standards for written works, but it's not so much a trad pub vs fanfic thing as 'what genre is this and does this show all the things I like about that genre'?

Which is why I don't make a distinction and refuse to read anything that doesn't show at least a basic grasp on grammar.
