I need to let this go.

So my sister is taking a new job and moving. And her new apartment only allows two pets. So she's giving away one of their cats to a family member. And I just can't get over it. It feels like giving away a family member to me. And I feel like they picked the one that was a little wild and a little off, and part of me feels like they didn't want to deal with him anymore.

I know they can't afford to buy a house right now. I know they couldn't find any apartments that allowed three pets.

But I still can't get over it. I feel like I'm losing a family member. I loved that cat. Even though it wasn't my cat and it is their decision to make. I can't stop thinking about this though and worrying about the poor little guy. Maybe the new situation will be good, but he's still going to know he's been abandoned. He's still going to miss his home.

Let it go and maybe take a leaf from your sister's book so maybe you can do right by the cat that is actually your responsibility.

Don't anthropomorphise the cat. Seriously, people need to stop doing this. I know they're our pets and we love them, but they are animals, not children. The cat will not feel betrayed or abandoned. It may be momentarily confused but then it will adapt to the situation. I'm sure the family members taking it in will treat it with love and kindness. The cat will not be thinking "omg my mommy has abandoned me!!" The cat will be thinking "Oh shit, new place. Does it have food? Check. Are these people petting me? Cool. I guess I can deal." Except it won't be thinking any of that because it's a cat. Don't worry.

I had to give up my cats when I moved and honestly, they're thriving at my aunt's house. Probably better than they were with my family. And honestly...they forgot about me. I watched them for a weekend and it was like I was a stranger - they got used to me after I fed them a few times but I know the next time I visit they won't recognize me again. I know it's hard not to project your feelings on the cat but...he's going to be fine.
