I tell people I watch this show because I think the male characters are hot.

Actually, I think the animation is creepy as shit and not a single character is or could be anything resembling attractive unless they were transplanted into another show with a radically different art style, but it has enough other things I like to make up for that, and this way people still think I'm straight.

The colours and assumed queer reasons for watching suggest that, but the 'I say I think the guys are hot'...not so much.

The only guys who have enough screen time to be reasonable reasons for watching are Steven and Greg.

And Steven is...Steven. And while I could certainly imagine someone finding Greg attractive, I don't think anyone who did would call him 'hot' - cute, cuddly, generally 'attractive', or any number of descriptors about his personality, yes, but not hot - and I certainly be surprised by someone claiming to find him hot as a way of maintaining their closet door.

Buck Dewey and Kevin would probably be quite attractive if they were real people, and maybe Sour Cream and Lars, too, but none of them have all that much screen time (Lars has the most, and if I had to guess, I'd wager he had more than a cameo in less than half the episodes).

i was thinking "free!" because of the colours -- the five main characters are associated with blue, green, purple, mostly red but sometimes pink, and yellow (...and also sometimes pink) respectively -- because it's a show known for starring handsome young men, and because said handsome young men have kind of uncanny-valley proportions. they are all very long and pointy and their limbs occasionally look like they've been broken in several places

Depending on where someone is, it could get them beaten and/or killed. In some countries, it can get them arrested and imprisoned or even the death penalty. But even if those aren't concerns, there is discrimination and, for some, the possibility of being disowned.

DA I mean, in context of the secret they could just say 'I watch this show because I like the story' and no one would ever have to wonder about OP's sexuality? I don't know about the show, though, so if straight people who watch it watch it for the hot male characters then that's definitely a factor.

My parents appreciate some reinforcement that I am Definitely Interested in Guys and Not Interested in Girls every so often, hence the "I watch it because the guys are hot". (Also because "I watch it for the story" would probably result in even more freaking out from my mom about the scientific accuracy than I already get - although to be fair, I agree with her that the writers seem to have learned everything they know about orbital mechanics from one viewing of Armageddon. That's part of what makes it fun.)
