I'm sure you could work the bisexuality angle but honestly? Not really possible with those two if you're being serious about canon. And sure, they have. That doesn't mean I'm not allowed to think some of age gaps can get a little creepy.

I think plenty of age gaps are creepy, mostly when combined with a power imbalance (wealthy men buying younger wives usually come to mind).

I was responding to the first two reasons you gave because they sounded silly to me, to be honest. Joss Whedon wouldn't have a problem with a same-sex couple and there have been big ages differences between couples on his shows before (Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike, Anya/Xander). If anyone could make a pairing like Simon/Mal work in canon, it would have been him.

However, your third reason sounds valid enough. I honestly can't argue whether that pairing could work in canon or not because I've never thought about it. And, to be extra honest, I've never seen Mal as some kind of father figure to Simon before. I just didn't get that vibe. Maybe I'll go do some reading about their relationship (romantic and otherwise).

Even though, y'know, I did bring up the third point. That's automatically dismissing because "they aren't gay; move along?" I suppose I should have stressed it more and or been more thought out like gogogidget.

And no, most people don't get that vibe because they're too busy classifying any tension as sexual. It probably doesn't help that Mal isn't exactly the best father figure in some ways, either.

I don't know about most people but I never saw the tension between Simon and Mal as sexual. More like, Mal is annoyed that he can't kick Simon and River off the ship because he has to do the right thing! Plus I mainly shipped Simon/Jayne.

True. I also felt a more familial vibe between Mal and River than Mal and Simon, particularly by the end of Serenity. I loved the scene with the two of them flying the ship.
