Re: 112, 146
If you're going to argue just to argue, um, get a better talking point. Srsly. That one is old and tired and completely not applicable here.
Looking at it from a solely canon perspective of what could have happened if there were more seasons/movies/what have you (or even if the comics are continued with a post-BDM timeline) and discounting any shippy "omg seekrit lurve" theories, Mal/Simon just isn't plausible.
Yes, it could probably be argued that canonly either of them are bisexual.
Yes, the age gap isn't much of an issue that would potentially keep them apart.
HOWEVER, it's the straight and age gap compounded with the parent/child relationship they have that makes it, if not impossible, just really weird to work with. Don't pretend that dynamic between them doesn't exist in canon. Fanfic? Sure, take it from different angles as you wish. But the father/son thing would have to be pretty clumsily pushed to the side to allow Mal/Simon to be a canon ship.
Especially in terms of the secret in question. Mal and Simon are "RAWR MY SISTER" "SHUT UP MY SHIP," not "Hey, did you make coffee?" and fucking up against a fish tank.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-04 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)The other reason sounds valid but I honestly couldn't argue the point because I've never thought about it. The first two reasons just sounded silly to me.
Re: 112, 146
And, in all the same-sex relationships in Joss' canons, it usually involves an established character connecting with a new character that identifies right off the bat as gay/bi. I can see Joss dooming Simon/Kaylee as he is wont to do and then giving Simon a male character to get his gay on with, but not Mal.
Then again, Joss has a penchant for fridging the gays (Tara, Andrew, pretty much all the boy whores in 'Heart of Gold') as much as he does any beloved character he gives us, so maybe keeping them straight is just a way to keep them breathing.

Good point. But was Andrew really killed off? I thought he was working for the Council by the end of the series. In my personal canon, Tara is totally alive and so is Anya and they are running around having adventures. Don't burst my bubble! Were all the boy whores killed off as well in Heart of Gold? I only remember Nandi dying.
As for the original topic, I have no idea whether Simon/Mal would work in canon but this discussion has made me want to find fic for it. I mainly shipped Simon/Jayne in the Firefly universe.
Re: 112, 146
My mistake. I just looked it up (I didn't pay much attention towards the end) and he did live. However, they straightened him up with a mention of living somewhere and dating chicks, so take that as you will. And I'm pretty sure about the boy whores, since when they cut away to the others fighting the boys were dropping steadily. That and I don't recall seeing any of them at Nandi's funeral at the end. I'll have to go back and watch it again to make sure. You also have to consider the fact that, in the Buffy comics,

So, as open as Joss is to writing storylines around and including characters of differing sexualities, I don't trust him to ever really do it any justice. At least not with his current, deep attachment to certain tropes.
There's some decent Mal/Simon if you can find it. Check around and I'm sure you'll see something.
Jayne/Simon, though, absolutely boggles my mind. I've read some before, and it's always been wildly and uncomfortably OOC.
Re: 112, 146
(Anonymous) 2008-08-06 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)I'll have to watch 'Heart of Gold' again because it's been a while. I'm sure we saw one of the boys at the end but you might well be right. Will have to check. I will be very sad if it's true.
Re: spoiler, I knew the first part and went 'yay!' but didn't know about the second. Why, Joss Whedon, why? >:( He's said he finds happy couples boring but this is getting ridiculous.
Jayne/Simon, though, absolutely boggles my mind.
Then my work here is done ;) It's the 'opposites attract' factor for me. I love characters that are very different (or at least they are on the surface) falling in love. The only fics I found where really short and there wasn't time to really show how their relationship developed. They weren't bad fics, just too short. Maybe more has been written in the meantime. Anyway, see you later!
