The idea that teenagers are innocent naive fools who must be protected from their own immaturity and stupidity is a VERY modern concept. Back in the day, if you looked old enough to fuck, said you were old enough to fuck, and were eager to fuck, people took your word for it. It's unfair to judge someone by social standards that didn't exist at the time.

He didn't know her age. Why should he have stopped? Even if he'd checked her ID (which I'm not sure he did) he would not have known because fake. I guess he should have had some doctors check the teeth of every groupie he slept with and who threw herself at him if the age they gave was actually their real age.

And we don't know whether he would have wanted people defending him over it because this whole thing was made public after he died.

...also: I just can't put this Bowie incident in the same category as a Polanski non-consent situation where a drugged child was raped.
