I haven't played V, but I remember IV being okay. There was of course the shitty way that Faustin's wife was treated, but I thought that was on purpose to show that Faustin was a horrible person who would wind up dying ten minutes later. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But yeah, usually the formula to making a videogame or comic "more gritty" is to make sure that the main characters have dysfunctional relationships with their loved ones, and also use an abundance of swear words liberally. Since there's going to going forced disagreements between main character and loved one, that means a lot of gendered slurs as well because "gritty".

Oh and the main character has to be sympathetic, so they have to be innocent to some extent. Which means the loved one who they have a dysfunctional relationship with will start to do emotionally damaging things (send the main character to jail, cheating on them, etc.) for seemingly no reason. Meanwhile when the main character does something bad it's sympathetic, because man-pain is the only one that's forgiveable.

Never played V, but let me know if that describes the treatment of female characters in it.

There's almost an infinite number of possible versions of Doctor Strange that would have been better, and this is definitely one of them. That looks fantastic.
