To me, shipping is a lot more about the character dynamics. If I find a pairing I like, I don't care what their genders or orientations are. Although I do wonder sometimes why I've never been into a f/f pairing and whether that's my issue or an issue with writing or what.

I've also found that the FANDOM is important. I like small to medium-sized fandoms with relatively little wank. I've soured on many M/M pairings because of the fandoms, frankly.

And of course the availability of characters is important too. My current M/F OTP is a fave partially because I love the F character so much, and as commented above, it wasn't always easy to find well-written female characters even a few years ago, at least not in the genres of shows I like.

As I've grown older, I've also been less interested in non-canon pairings, and it's still rare to see slash couples in canon.

So, yeah, lots of reasons for my shifting preferences. You're welcome for the essay. :D

This.

Yes, yes, yes, this. A thousand times this. It’s all about the character dynamics.

Also count me in for not ever really having a f/f ship and not understanding why. :S

Same, and I wonder about my lack of F/F ships as well. I used to assume it was due to disinterest in F/F smut, but I realized that as much as I love smut and read vast quantities of it for a few ships, I have a lot of ships where I have no interest in smutfic.

I think part of it is that while well-written female character may be more abundant in the kinds of media I like, they still aren't interacting with each other enough, so the character dynamics just aren't there.
