(Anonymous) 2018-07-04 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)I've also found that the FANDOM is important. I like small to medium-sized fandoms with relatively little wank. I've soured on many M/M pairings because of the fandoms, frankly.
And of course the availability of characters is important too. My current M/F OTP is a fave partially because I love the F character so much, and as commented above, it wasn't always easy to find well-written female characters even a few years ago, at least not in the genres of shows I like.
As I've grown older, I've also been less interested in non-canon pairings, and it's still rare to see slash couples in canon.
So, yeah, lots of reasons for my shifting preferences. You're welcome for the essay. :D

(Anonymous) 2018-07-05 06:41 am (UTC)(link)I think part of it is that while well-written female character may be more abundant in the kinds of media I like, they still aren't interacting with each other enough, so the character dynamics just aren't there.
