Why is it awful?

My guess would be because the real people in question are straight/not openly gay or bi or whatever, so featuring two nominally non-LGBTQ celebrities fangirls ship for Pride Month is weird.

At least with fictional ships you can fanwank around the character being gay/bi/whatever, and say fans want to see representation and gay love in their fiction, but with real people... well, it's different.

Also a lot of people are ashamed or embarrassed by RPF in gneral and want to keep it solely within fandom spaces (hence so many locked journals, AO3s, tumblrs, etc for RPF content).

And then there's also the issue of these guys being gay and outing themselves would be very much career-ending. So that's another little bit of ickiness on top of the rest.

I've read some interesting essays for uni about how fan fiction can be an avenue for queer kids to explore their sexuality so it CAN be useful to teach people about pride but... Yeah no I'm with you on not having RPF in a magazine, nope nope nope.

Agreed on RPS, not so sure about 'a lot of m/m and f/f shippers are straight'. I see where you're coming from OP, I don't think writing a piece on shipping culture has much to do with pride month at all (especially since the article seems to be focusing on the ships themselves, not much on the fandoms surrounding them), but had this piece been about how shippers found a way to explore their sexuality then I think it's a legit topic for pride month. There are more and more non-straight people creating fanwork, I don't think 'but more straight women do this' should be a big issue any more.
