You want a gold star for being a Cool Granny, or what? It's not appropriate to dress in such a way as to upstage the bride, and it never has been. Dressing for someone else's wedding isn't about displaying your fashion sense, it's about dressing for someone's special occasion that is 100% not about you.

As soon as I have a grandchild, I'll take you up on that gold star. Until then, I'll just have to settle for being cool.

It seems to me that the people who upstaged the bride were the paparazzi and Daily Mail writers who focused on one guest.

This. She could have been wearing a floor-length, high-necked red gown with a train and it would have been just as inappropriate.

I thought the bride looked amazing, it's her day and she + everyone around her knows it.
