I can agree with this. I hate how much of a show weddings are supposed to be, where they're steeped in so much rules and etiquette no matter where you go. Why does it have to be such a big production? Although I probably just can't relate, because I got married in a courthouse with no guests. I just didn't want to spend so much money and be put in the spotlight just to get married. So I can put my own life experiences aside and respect others for wanting extravagant weddings, but I can't say I get it.

My son and his wife did their own wedding, and I'm told it was much less expensive than most relatively traditional ones, although I damned near choked when they told me the cost. Their friends and ours dressed as they thought was celebratory - lots of tatts, neon pink hair and, yes, tight red dresses, sharing the room with more traditional dress. It was glorious. and joyous. I was married in a friend's living room, wearing my mother's wedding dress, with about 15 friends and my mom and brother in attendance, so I kind of share your memories of a small wedding.

I can put my own life experiences aside and respect others for wanting extravagant weddings, but I can't say I get it.

Yup.
