I specified the "ship" part of it because way back when, there were a lot of people complaining about "misogyny" when slash fans bashed canon love interests. I personally never quite bought it, because het fans could be just as bad about male characters who threatened their OTP.

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen for other reasons, mind you. Moreover, I think it is very telling that you'll find fans in slash-heavy fandoms praise shows for having "awesome female characters", but you'll be hard-pressed to find fanworks including these female characters as anything else than cheerleaders for the the m/m couples.

Yep. Looking at you, Will and Kevin from "Criminal Minds".

Agreed on this, too.

yeah i'd say the ship aspect is more of a factor than the female aspect, i've been a part of plenty of het fandoms that have virulently hated any and all female characters that so much as looked at the dude that was one-half of the fandom OTP. it's just with slash fans it's pretty much always going to be a female character getting the brunt of shipper-ire, which absolutely can make it look like m/m fandoms hate women.

though tbh i'd say there are some m/m fans that do seem to just hate every female character in existence, but for a majority i bet it's more than likely your usual 'get away from my ship' ott behavior that all fandoms have.

which is still stupid, but at least explainable.
