It's frustrating because, like, you're right. You're 100% totally right. And also, there is a lot of criticism of female characters in a lot of fandom that is bullshit and sexist. And once you blow things up to the scale of an Internet fandom, those topics lose any kind of nuance they might once have had and become impossible to actually discuss reasonably.

There's just kind of... no real satisfying answer here, unless it's "only discuss fandom with people that you know to be reasonable".

I'm not really a fan of the show either, but it was said to be kind of revolutionary in being a sex-positive show starring a cast of adult women. More to the point, it's got a vibe that's either going to register as fun or grating, and a lot of people fell into the first category. I don't think the women were supposed to be flawless, rather, their mistakes and flaws are usually easy to identify and tend to end up being "lessons" narrated by Carrie at the end of the episode.

I also have to admit, while I was never into the show, I did go see the first movie with my mom, and actually thought it was really fantastic. The lessons felt both authentic and were really positive and kind of moving. But I don't think the actual series itself was ever quite that good. (and the second film was a racist shitshow so whatever)

As someone, uh, much older than 25, you'll find some things don't change. That's not a bad thing. I still like a bunch of things I liked as a teen.

That doesn't mean I haven't grown as a person. It means teen me had pretty good taste. :)
