(Anonymous) 2018-07-07 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)It just sucked, because I had about equal male and female character favorites and so often the female ones were bashed or ignored in favor of male characters. It became really really tiresome. (And was a big reason I mostly left fandom.)

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 01:42 am (UTC)(link)I think this is part of what the OP meant about having to write essays to prove their dislike is not sexist. Sometimes I can see similarities in male characters I like and female characters I dislike (and other times it's vice versa). And I could write essays about how the difference in their motives, the narrative framing of their actions, and other factors that make them not exactly the same play a role in whether I like or dislike the character. But I shouldn't have to. Two characters can do similar things and still be very different, even within the framework of their similarities. I think knowing this should just be common sense.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 02:13 am (UTC)(link)They can, but I don't think it was the case with the fandom I'm thinking of specifically. I don't want to name it, as I don't want to get into debate about that fandom right now, as I've been out of it for years and I was so burned out on defending the one character that I just really don't want to get into it again, but there were a number of specific things that people complained about with the female character and the male character did the same exact things and they loved it and talked about those things in a positive way. It's not so much that they loved one character and hated the other. It's that they loved the things only when done by the male character. If that makes any sense? It might not without full context. And again, this might not be a universal fandom thing, especially recently, but I was really into this one fandom and it was huge (and really frustrated me) there.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)It's absolutely possible to see a difference between two characters who do similar things, and have good and valid reasons to not like the other. It's also absolutely possible for people to be sexist. So the reality is that, if you don't want to explain it further, I am going to think that it's possible that you're sexist, and be at least a little weirded out about it.
If you don't want to write an essay about it, that's entirely your prerogative. But that leaves it uncertain and ambiguous why you dislike the character. I'm not going to assume that you're a sexist. Neither am I going to assume that you're arguing in good faith. But like AYRT, I am going to wonder.
