They can, but I don't think it was the case with the fandom I'm thinking of specifically. I don't want to name it, as I don't want to get into debate about that fandom right now, as I've been out of it for years and I was so burned out on defending the one character that I just really don't want to get into it again, but there were a number of specific things that people complained about with the female character and the male character did the same exact things and they loved it and talked about those things in a positive way. It's not so much that they loved one character and hated the other. It's that they loved the things only when done by the male character. If that makes any sense? It might not without full context. And again, this might not be a universal fandom thing, especially recently, but I was really into this one fandom and it was huge (and really frustrated me) there.
