I'm not really a fan of the show either, but it was said to be kind of revolutionary in being a sex-positive show starring a cast of adult women. More to the point, it's got a vibe that's either going to register as fun or grating, and a lot of people fell into the first category. I don't think the women were supposed to be flawless, rather, their mistakes and flaws are usually easy to identify and tend to end up being "lessons" narrated by Carrie at the end of the episode.

I also have to admit, while I was never into the show, I did go see the first movie with my mom, and actually thought it was really fantastic. The lessons felt both authentic and were really positive and kind of moving. But I don't think the actual series itself was ever quite that good. (and the second film was a racist shitshow so whatever)

Yep this. Well, most of this.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Woah, racist how? I know nothing about it.

As I recall, the ladies go to a middle eastern country where local women where burkas. "hilarity" ensues as they tout their Western feminism about, at one point one of the women gets arrested for having sex in public and is outraged. And they only finally connect with the local women when it is revealed that the local women secretly wear designer fashion underneath their burkas. It's a lot of supposed comic relief at them bumbling about in a different culture and making fun of said culture.

really baffling that anyone would have thought that this would make a good movie and a nice follow-up to the first movie, which was actually pretty good.

Jeez, it's almost as if different people enjoy different things and the world doesn't revolve around you!

Rude

I think it was a partly wish fulfillment thing and a partly identifying with the characters thing. This is just a guess on my part though, because I don't watch or like the show.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-07 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved the show when it was new. There was really nothing else like it at the time. It was fresh and fun and a guilty pleasure sort of show, for me. I haven't watched it in forever so maybe it doesn't hold up well in 2018? Idk or maybe it just ain't your thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-07 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I never got it either. I mean, people can like whatever they want and it's normal that it would wind up being important to some people. Because pretty much every show will resonate with someone somewhere. But I don't get how it's that important for so many, how it's taken on such relevance in (pop) culture at large. I suppose it must be because of the attitude towards women's sexuality.

I will admit it's been ages since I've watched more than snippets. I did make a point of watching the first movie because it was such a big deal at the time, and just thought it was kind of...empty? Boring? It's also definitely a personal thing. Because even though I totally understand why it would be fun, wish-fulfilling light entertainment for some, their lives don't really appeal to me.

I don’t get it either, but I’m okay with people liking whatever shows they like. The part that makes me go all “Seriously?!” is all this commentary about how feminist it is. I’m not sure what exactly is feminist about a show starring four vapid women whose lives revolve around designer clothes and sex. I can understand if you enjoy it as a form of lifestyle porn, but I’m not seeing the feminist aspect.

Of course, they said similar things about Ally McBeal which is even more ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Now hang on. There's nothing NOT feminist about liking designer clothes or liking sex.

What made the show significant from a feminist perspective was that it was a mainstream sex-positive female show, starring the friendship of adult women who liked having sex and weren't coy or ashamed about it. True, in 2018 that may not be so shocking (though even today, it's not easy to find shows starring a cast that exclusively stars four thirty-something year old women).

Did the show have some problems? Sure. But let's not say it inherently cannot be feminist because the women like fashion, or even that they are self-obsessed.

I really love the snow but my sister hates it with a passion. Different strokes for different folks. I loved that the show highlighted the absurdity of dating and displayed the importance of female friendships. There was a lot of wish fulfillment of the "rich and fabulous NYC life" variety, but as another comment had said, it can either be fun or grating depending on the viewer.

I used to catch a few episodes of this when I was a kid and I remember being a bit shocked by all the sex (I was, like, ten) and completely fascinated by the fashion. They all looked so hip and cool, and here I was, living in a small provincial town wanting to grow up already so I could look as cool as them.

It was a big deal because it was ground breaking. There was no show like it that had been as popular as it before it aired. It was also a big deal because of how relatable the stories were, especially the girls' bad date experiences. Women would come up to the writers all the time and say "oh my God, that actually happened to me." Hope that explanation helps.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-31 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, to straight women

(Anonymous) 2018-07-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The writing was genuinely clever. And yeah all the characters were flawed, but the show usually called them on it. I'd compare it with early Modern Family: not as groundbreaking as people claim it is, but funny, lighthearted, and not intellectually demanding - perfect for casual viewing.

It was super, super popular with straight women and gay men at the time. It dictated (regular person) fashion.

Season one is pretty meh, to be honest. They have Carrie doing 4th wall stuff which does *not* work. I have watched season one once only.

But over all? A good show. Four women with different takes on life and love, very sex positive, very woman positive. Sure, it wasn't perfect, and it suffered a bit sometimes re: the times, and attitudes. But over all? Fun and sexy and silly and heartwarming.

The first movie wasn't bad. The second movie sucked balls.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the show took a season or two to really settle in. And ultimately it will probably be a product of its times and be pretty dated, so I get why younger people aren't going to understand why it was significant at the time.

Though it is STILL hard to find mainstream shows where all the main leads are adult women (not young adults/teens/students, but mature adults). The sex-positive thing might seem less of a big deal and the cast is notably very very white, but a story that is, at its core, about adult female friendship? Not that easy to replace, evidently.

Yup, all of this. It could have done some things better, for sure, but four women, *older* women, not 20-25 year olds, being best friends before boyfriends and being independent, smart, assured? Quite nice.

Though I agreed with almost nothing she espoused, my favorite was Charlotte (go figure).

What a timing! I was thinking about this show myself. Personally it wasn't my thing but what people have said, it was groundbreaking for its time. Before it I don't think there where many shows if at all that dealt with older women and sex.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I never really understood it either, but different people like different things so...
