It was a big deal because it was ground breaking. There was no show like it that had been as popular as it before it aired. It was also a big deal because of how relatable the stories were, especially the girls' bad date experiences. Women would come up to the writers all the time and say "oh my God, that actually happened to me." Hope that explanation helps.
