You're right. * Although I've seen the converse, where I'm trying to critique the writing (which is usually by a dude) of a female character and how it's lacking, and you get defenses of the character (and as a consequence, the writer) as if they're a real woman.

My favorite variant of this was a Tumblr post where the person wrote with sincere sadness that female characters "aren't allowed to dress how they want". They never replied to the reblog about how, being NOT REAL, the characters didn't actually pick out their own outfits.
