TBF it wasn't just slash fans - there was a lot of fans of the Gundam-series and mechagenre who really disliked the tone of GW, and Relena took the brunt of it - but they were definitely a big part of it. Didn't help that, since this was pre-streaming days, less people had seen the canon and relied on fanon and character exaggeration.

Funnily enough I ended up liking her more than if people hadn't kept going on about how Terrible she is. Because of that, I was pleasantly surprised by her positive sides and development.

Agreed. I actually came to like Relena by the end, after starting the series with mixed feelings on her. But I still didn't like the actual show, at least as a Gundam anime. And I didn't really like any ships.
