My favorite is when you dislike a female character because the way the writers wrote her was sexist. Like sorry, but I am not going to like a female character when her entire characterization and motivation revolves around a man because that is just sexist and bad writing.

Yes, but I think that's because a lot of fans can't separate "the character in media" from "the character as an actual person".

I mean, you can recognize that the way a character was written is not the fault of the "character as an actual person," but there's nothing in that viewpoint that gives a compelling reason not to dislike the character anyway. To say "I like this character, I just hate the way her personality and everything else about her was written" makes no sense.

Exactly. There's a character in one of my fandoms like this, actually - I have nothing against her personality and I probably would have liked her otherwise, I just hate the way the writers tossed out everything that was interesting about her (and she actually started out as being an interesting, dynamic character who had a lot of potential) in favor of having a huge portion of her characterization revolve around her crush on a guy who is completely oblivious to her feelings.

I don't hate the character, I hate the way she was written, but it's impossible to divorce the way she was written from her as a character. Whether it was the fault of the writers or not, I dislike what her characterization is.
