As someone, uh, much older than 25, you'll find some things don't change. That's not a bad thing. I still like a bunch of things I liked as a teen.

That doesn't mean I haven't grown as a person. It means teen me had pretty good taste. :)

Exactly.

Plus, if there's some fundamental aspects of yourself-certain values, beliefs about life, etc.-that are very important to you, aspects that have been a part of you since you were old enough to really think about such issues, then I think relating to stuff from your younger days can be a good reminder/reassurance of how those values and beliefs and such are still as meaningful and important to you now as they were back then.

" It means teen me had pretty good taste. :)"

Yeah, not necessarily.

lol are you questioning someone judging their previous self's taste as though you have more information on the matter?

I would think they are the only person who can actually judge whether their own taste was good or not by their standards.

Except they didn't say "by [their]standards". They phrased it as an absolute, which is why "not necessarily".
Reading comprehension is a thing.

DA--teen me had pretty good taste. Also as a preschooler I was OBSESSED with Johnny Cash. Preschooler me had FABULOUS taste.

There are some things that I loved as a teen that I no longer enjoy. Most of them are books that I used to think were super romantic now make me think that the protagonists need therapy. I still like nearly all the music I enjoyed as a teen though. All that angsty stuff I used to listen to still sounds good to me because sometimes I really don't feel o-fucking-kay and it feels validating to hear it in a song.

I'm twenty-four and I still regularly listen to the old emo music I played when I was 13, I don't think it's that unusual to still be attached to the music you liked. And why should everything you liked as a kid need to change? You can still feel the same now as you did bas then about certain things (not necessarily everything, but it's okay to have some same emotions and opinions)

Oh shiiiit, I forgot about that song. I used to love it, too. Let me go see if it still holds up.

IDK - I've been struggling with depression for the past six, seven years, and whenever I find I still enjoy something I enjoyed as a teen or young(er) adult, it makes me happy. Change within oneself is great, but sometimes it's nice to be reminded that bits of the person you used to be are still in there.

I didn't change until I was 30.

Things do change, if you bother paying attention the lessons your life is teaching you.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Of course things change. That doesn't mean you can't continue to relate to some of the stuff you held onto as a kid. You might have been holding onto a good thing.

I mean... it's just one song? And from a quick glance of the lyrics, it's not about anything that's only specific to teenagers? Lots of people feel that way, at many ages. You do change as you grow older, but you don't morph into a completely different person. Some things remain the same.

I still like songs I liked as a teenager. It doesn't mean that I haven't changed.

I'm in my 50s. I read a ton of books as a kid (and still read a lot of books). Most of my childhood favorites no longer seem so amazing, but a few still do - though I suspect for different reasons.

Music, on the other hand, doesn't usually impress me much, but I find I often enjoy music I learned many years ago even more now. Maybe because music connects with a person in a more direct, subconscious way than written fiction?
