Yeah, I would find that irritating too. Mine are either alphabetical by author or grouped by series, depending on which bookshelf we're talking about.

I separate my manga and my comics and my novels but that's more because of the sizes being different and it bothers me aesthetically otherwise.

But other than that everything is alphabetical by author. I FUCKING HATE THOSE STUPID TALL PAPERBACKS THOUGH OMG, DIE IN A FIRE!

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Stupid tall books are stupid. I have a trilogy series and the final book is taller than the rest. Why would they do that? It really pisses me off.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ours is more like a library with nonfiction being grouped into categories and then alphabetical by author, fiction is on the shelves in the other room and alphabetical by author. We donated most of our fiction books to libraries, hospitals, and charity shops so the whole collection fits two smaller bookcases. We have mostly switched to ebooks for fiction now because we move house every few years and moving thousands of books sucked and we've never lived anywhere that could fit all of them unpacked.

YES! They're terrible! Who decided they were a good idea?

I'm usually not super bothered by different covers/designs in a series, but if one (or more) books and significally taller it's just hnnnnnnnng.
(I buy a lot of used books online and sometimes you just can't see which edition you'll get or sometimes everything is out of print and you have to take what you can get)

Yeah everything seems to be a mash of trade paperbacks (ew) or those tall mass market paperbacks (extra ew). Drives me insane! Because I like to double up on my rows to save bookcases and I can't with those heights!

Ha. Just try dealing with nonfiction art books some time. I've got them ranging in height from 6 to 16 inches....

(Anonymous) 2018-07-09 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even try to put those into the bookcase, they get sorted in piles. There's only one standing group of books that are roughly around a similar size that I weeded out of the rest, and they're on a side table, not in a bookcase.

I ditto this. I love looking at artfully arranged shelfies because I have too many books and too little artistic eye to ever have such shelves myself.

Yeah this looks very visually appealing but it'd drive me nuts to do that myself. I like things alphabetized.

I sort vaguely by category and broadly by read and unread. Cute shelves like this isn't half bad for decorating tho. I have some half-filled shelves where I use the open space for cute stuff.

I have a lot of books doube-stacked due to no damn room and yes, it's annoying as hell.

I also have some 'decorative' stuff on some of my shelves, but they're in front of books i don't read all that often.

Group by author is the only way to go.

Yeah these always LOOK good but it would annoy me too much if I had to separate books by the same author to make it work. Our shelves could be arranged better (they need to be tidied a lot) but we still manage to keep everything together by author or series.

The colour system also wouldn't work for me because we have a lot of comics/graphic novels and although most of those tend to have a dark/black colour or white on the spine, I would still hate having a random tall book in the middle of a shelf.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried for organized bookshelves. Now I try for ones that aren't three books deep. It's like an archaeological dig.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-09 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Mine were two books deep, but I got a new bookshelf and now all my books can breathe. I wonder how long it'll last before they get crowded again.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-08 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate this trend. Books are for reading, not decoration purposes.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-09 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Why not both? Though seriously, I think it's been a trend for a really long time. Why else did rich people have huge libraries in their house?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-09 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
At least take the bookstore stickers off your books, picture OP!

(Anonymous) 2018-07-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I like the look of such arrangements too, but it just wouldn't work for me. Like you said, too many series, too many different authors going all over the place. I also don't like to let too much stuff pile up on my shelves because I can't see the spines.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-09 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
this would never work for me. For many reasons but mostly because I think the majority of my book covers are predominantly black.
