Netflix sucks! what's that with the region-locking, seriously?

I hate region-locking too. I want to support the creators and whatnot, but I can't do it if the stuff literally isn't available in my country.

Streaming rights vary by country

I know that but it still sucks. And what happens when people travel abroad?

NAYRT It wasn't Netflix, but FX Now and when I went to Europe, I got an error message and nothing would play for me. I think Netflix would still work, but it would show you the stuff that's available in that country and not your home one.

That's not how Netflix does it. You need a VPN that will show you as being in the country where your subscription is or you can't use it at all. Your subscription is only for the content they hold rights to in your country and they cannot apply your fees to content licensing for other countries. This holds true even within free movement areas like the EU but some countries are grouped together and so subscribers can access it across multiple countries.

Huh, the more you know. Thanks for the explanation, anon.

This is definitely not true, or wasn't true when I lived in London. I used my American account, and all that happened was that when I logged in, I was accessing the UK version of Netflix. There was no problem at all. If I wanted to see something that was only on the US version of Netflix, I had to use a VPN.

They changed that at least as early as 2015. I was told the same thing by a lot of people when I moved from the US to England in late 2015 but it wasn't true at all. I had to cancel and resubscribe with Netflix UK to access anything without a VPN.

Hmm, okay. I lived in London from 2014-2015, so I guess it's possible it changed right after I moved.

I remember specifically watching Spartacus on Netflix in the UK (I was using my family's American account). But UK Netflix only had two seasons licensed at the time, so I had to use a VPN to swap to American Netflix to watch all five seasons.

Yeah, I don't think this is Netflix's fault at all. It's inconvenient, but also not really an ill-intended thing, either. It's just about licensing rights. Netflix can't just show something in every single country if it hasn't even been released in that country yet, or something.

So - what people should do is make a Netflix 'community' - share netflix log ons and passwords with friends in other countries so everybody can see everything.

Would that work? I'm not sure if it would with the comment up-thread about VPNs, but it'd be cool if it did.

Re: Complaint thread

No, because you can login to your Netflix account anywhere, but it's your computer's location that will determine which "version" of Netflix you see. You'd have to use a VPN - I used one when I lived in Japan (before Netflix existed, so the site was blocked) and in the UK (to watch US-only stuff), but Netflix has smartened up to that lately and the site will detect a lot of the common proxies people use and block access.

Ah. Lame.

And so, basically, if you're a citizen of Country A, you can't watch Netflix if you're traveling. That's lame.

I run into that problem when I want to download music from amazon.de. (I'm in the U.S.) I can't download songs even though I could buy a CD with the same songs and have it shipped to me and that would be fine.

U.S. iTunes usually has what I want but not always and it is frustrating. It should be my worst problem I guess.
