Apparently: "It’s the most challenging role of her career, transforming herself into a portly, butch transsexual, cutting her hair short, taping down her ample breasts, gaining weight and wearing padding."

Which...okay?
But that just seems like...what's the point? I don't think she's a bad actor, but acting in all that kind of makeup and prosthetics won't be easy, and it's very easy to lose the person in the costume.

I can see why they wanted a 'name' for this movie, but she's the wrong name.

Charlize Theron won best actress oscar for Monster with all that make up.
Gary Oldman (FINALLY GODDAMNIT) won an oscar for Churchill with all that make up...
So, there is a point.

And IMO it's good to lose the actress in the makeup. All I see when I see Scarlett Johansson is Scarlett Johansson. Not Black Widow, not The Major, not whatever she was in The Spirit, not whoever in that airport movie...Just her.

Which is why Oldman, Fassbender and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are my favourite actors. I can never spot them unless I'm looking. I seriously didn't know Oldman was Commissioner Gordon until after I saw Dark Knight...

I didn't mean - you don't recognize the actor under the makeup, I meant - all that makeup and whatnot kind of *becomes* the character, rather than the actor. It does the acting for them.

Like i said, I don't think she's a *bad* actor, but frankly - I don't think she's good enough to act her way out from under all that stuff.

Yeah, she's probably no Ron Pearlman.
But we'll find out sometime soon, I guess.

like, good to know this trans portrayal is in good hands-- firstly with the outdated "transsexual" terminology, and secondly using "butch," a term for masculine WOMEN to describe a man... this will be a clusterfuck

Well, we knew we were in good hands when they cast a fembot as Tex.

OTOH it produced this gem:
