I kind of hate how the publicity for stuff like that goes, though, like it’s so brave for a pretty woman to play an ugly one, or a cis woman to play a trans man, or an able-bodied person to play a disabled person, because real bravery would be casting ugly women and trans actors and disabled people, and ffs please no more “white actors as POC characters” bullshit.

Oh, a meaty autobiographical role about an older, fat, trans(? - some sources say Tex Gill was trans, some say they were a butch lesbian) person? Let's cast a young thin actress!

I understand why people are upset. There are plenty of actresses out there looking for roles like these that actually fit the profile of Tex Gill physically, but Hollywood loves "uglifying" pretty actors and putting them in fatsuits and inches of prosthetics.

I get her answers about this have been pretty bad, but I still want to know why isn't even half of the criticisms directed to the people who cast her in the first place.

I'm not sure that's how it works when you're on Scarlett Johansson's level. Given her fame, and also her previous work with Rupert Sanders, I suspect that she had a lot of agency in choosing to work on this project and play this part. A lot of times, having an actress like Johansson attached is a key part of getting a project like this funded in the first place.

Also, way more people know who Scarlett Johansson is than know who Rupert Sanders is. So that's probably part of it as well.

Which...okay?
But that just seems like...what's the point? I don't think she's a bad actor, but acting in all that kind of makeup and prosthetics won't be easy, and it's very easy to lose the person in the costume.

I can see why they wanted a 'name' for this movie, but she's the wrong name.

its called going for an Oscar. This movie isn't going to have enough of a fanbase to be a blockbuster so they could have cast someone more suited to the roll in its place without losing much money. All this is, is her wanting a role that will give her a chance at an Oscar so she can be seen as a 'serious' actress.
