People who eat fish!!

(Anonymous) 2018-07-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
So, my family wants to go to a fancy seafood place. They have a couple non-fish items but I figured this could be my chance to broaden my horizons. The only kind of fish I've ever eaten is the liquid cheese version of fish, canned tuna. I don't know what I dislike about fish. Either the texture or taste. Can someone suggest some fish types that would be good for someone who does not like fish?

Salmon.

Cod, haddock, trout, and tilapia are all mild and non-fishy-tasting fish. Salmon can be stronger and you might not like it. Catfish is generally farmed these days and is usually mild. Seared Ahí tuna is rare (raw) inside but is also not fishy and imo as a person with texture issues myself, has a texture I actually enjoy. As far as shellfish goes, shrimp and prawns might be to your taste, as might scallops. I would avoid mussels and oysters, they are very strong.

Scallops! They are not super-fishy, and big sea scallops (as opposed to bay scallops) are thick and rather like steak in texture, with a very slightly sweet taste. They are *delicious*.

Seconding this. Seared scallops with fresh, seasonal vegetables are a favorite of mine.

So I won't ask how the only fish you've ever eaten is canned tuna, but as someone who also used to hate fish until I actually started eating it, I will do my best. Just to be clear, canned tuna does NOT taste like a tuna prepared virtually any other way. I hate canned tuna so much, but fancy tuna is amazing, it's a completely different taste. A seared tuna steak, still pink in the middle, is so delicious it's insane. Any ahi tuna or Hawaiian poke type recipe is so yummy. Also, if you're adventurous enough for some kind of sushi, tuna is the best raw, imo, or at least only lightly cooked.

Also, tilapia is really yummy, especially when lighted breaded or fried. Scallops are little pieces of heaven that melt in your mouth. Shrimp is also very tasty, no matter how it's prepared.

Otherwise, if you're really opposed to fish and want a 101 easy to eat dish, go for a fish and chips. It will probably be breaded/fried cod with french fries, even fancy restaurants often have it. If you like fried chicken, you will probably do fine with fish and chips.

Also recommending tilapia as a good starter fish for a person who doesn't know if they like fish. Walleye is also a decent mild whitefish. If you see butterfish? Go for that butterfish. Mackerel also has a fairly mild, enjoyable taste, which is ironic given that it's the smelliest thing I've ever had the displeasure to cook and clean up after.

A fancy seafood place might not serve it, but pollock is another really mild tasting fish. How mild? It's used in both McDonald's filet-o-fish sandwiches AND imitation crabsticks. It's basically the white rice of the fish world, in my opinion.

I also vouch for tilapia, cod, haddock, and scallops.

Shrimp tastes good, but if you have texture issues, how it's cooked and/or presented might turn you off a little. The meat itself is sweet and smooth, but often some of the tail will be left on it which I always remove (pretty easy to do) because I can't stand the rubbery/crunchiness of it.

Whatever you get, I hope you enjoy it! :D

Wait, do some people eat the shrimp tail? I thought you weren't supposed to eat it, it was just left on for... like either a place to pick up the shrimp or for decoration. And since that grosses me out (also grossed out when they still have their heads/feet, or when fish still look like fish) I always wished they would remove them first.

FYI Shrimp tails aren't meant to be eaten...

Freshwater fish like lake perch, walleye and bluegill do not have that fishy taste or smell. As for seafood, shrimp and grouper/sea bass. Shrimp is probably your best bet for trying seafood for the first time.
