Oh, just in time. Books or movies that already have relatively dramatic themes, and decide to throw in cancer or AIDS or some other deathly illness as well.

I mean, I get why - adulthood is sucky and bad things happen all at once. Sadly, I know that more than I ever have. But it's fiction. Choose a few shitty things to carry out the plot and then carry on. Also, why is illness so popular? I can't be the only person who wants less of that in their fiction when it's been so present in their real life.

Hard same. I've lost so many people to cancer, I just have to sigh when it shows up in plots where I wasn't expecting it.
