Joss Whedon New TV Series

"Titled The Nevers, the series is described as 'an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.'

"Says Whedon, who will serve as showrunner: 'I honestly couldn’t be more excited. The Nevers is maybe the most ambitious narrative I’ve created, and I can’t imagine a better home for it than HBO. Not only are they the masters of cinematic long-form, but their instant understanding of my odd, intimate epic was as emotional as it was incisive. It’s been too long since I created an entirely new fictional world, and the HBO team offer not just scope and experience, not just ‘prestige,’ but a passionate collaboration. I could go on, but — I’m impatiently grateful to say — I have work to do.'"

Thoughts???

I am... dubious. As has been previously discussed on this forum, Whedon may have been marvellous in the 90s-early 00s, but he simply hasn't updated his thinking since, so his attempts to be 'progressive' tend to be tired, shallow, and lacking in intersectionality.
Also - his script for Wonder Woman was just The Worst.
But who knows! Maybe this will be great! Stranger things have happened.

This. I think it's curious and slightly tone deaf choice, but I'm not surprised. Whedon has gotten a lot of mileage off Buffy and Firefly. I don't think he'll handle writing for a lot of female characters well, but he's still got plenty of fans who are willing to cut him lots of slack.

HBO so they may want a lot of nudity which sucks.

I wasn't bothered by the nudity in Boardwalk Empire though

IDK nudity isn't bad in and of itself

I'll probably want to like it because the premise sounds kind of fun? I'm a bit over some of his repetitive casting choices, still cackling occasionally remembering his terrible W.W. script, and I don't know how easy it's going to be to stream it here, but if the trailer looks good I might try anyway.

I will watch a few eps to see, but...i don't hold out hope. Whedon has been nothing but disappointing for a long time.

I guess it's theoretically possible that he's learned some lessons and changed his way of writing

I'm not going to bet on it, but I want to believe

It sounds fun. I like Whedon on tv. I think it could be really good. It could also flop. But I'm cautiously optimistic.

The premise sounds interesting but Joss has become an incredibly lazy writer and hasn't grown at all since the 90's.

I especially resent both his one-note creation of drama that revolves around the "is a character happy? Take that thing/person that makes them happy away from them! (which in his mind always seems to translate to 'any married or dating couple will wind up with a dead partner')" and his inability to write adult relationships that resonate any higher than bickering 13 yr olds.

The latter in particular seems to have been branded as a stylistic choice, so I can't expect that to change. Additionally, he doesn't seem to have noticed that the 90's are over, and yes, we all know what a trope is now, and no, his idea of subversion is not genius-level clever or new in 2018, nor is anachronistic banter a complete substitute for character development, so I'm personally not holding out for a major improvement.

I'd love to be pleasantly surprised, though.
