I saw someone seriously ask if this meant that actors should be restricted to playing their own race and gender, as though that's a bad thing. (They also included 'sexuality' in there, but that's something that is just acting...)

As a person of mixed race, if I were told my acting roles were restricted to those of my genetic makeup, that would be a very, very small list.

Too late- already saw the comments on a Facebook post about this. One person was like, "But Daniel Radcliffe isn't a wizard and we're okay with him playing a wizard!" and I replied "Do you know any real wizards? Actual, IRL, wizards? Really?" and they reacted like I hadn't gotten the joke. I'm just... no, mate, I got the joke, you were likening trans people to fictional superbeings. I get it. You don't think trans people are real, or not real enough to be considerate of. Now please stop.

Eh.
The thing i read about all the prosthetics, padding, etc. she would have to don to actually resemble the character made me wish not. I don't think she's a *bad* actor, but I don't think she could really pull off acting from under all that stuff.

How does costuming hinder anyone's ability to act, in any way?

Because sometimes the makeup/prosthetics kind of *take over*, bury the actor, and they're in there trying to get expressions or emotions out past padding, fake teeth, layers of rubber, etc.... I think that's pretty damn hard, and I don't know that she's that good.

tbh, there's a nasty part of me that hopes a transgendered person who looks NOTHING like the person gets the role and does the worst job ever and the movie is awful because they prioritized whether or not a person is transgendered over actual acting ability. But of course people will spoon it up because there's no way that having the "right" person could ever make the movie anything but amazing, and if you speak negatively about the film in any way, you're obviously transphobic.

For the record, if Ms. Johansson were side-by-side with a person I knew to be transgendered, I'd probably go with the transgendered person... assuming the acting ability were there. But just resembling a character does not automatically make an actor the best choice for the role. I get that people want to be socially aware but the backlash is just over the top. There is such a thing as a gray area.

I hate this argument just because your waifu was rightfully criticized. There are trans actors out there and the fact the cis people regularly take trans roles from them is abhorrent. Get the fuck over your boner for ScarJo.
