And from not-a-superfan, but from someone who likes the theatre, it bears repeating: a stage play /has to/ be simpler and denser than a novel. It /has/ to emphasise different aspects, it /has/ to use different storytelling tools for making the same point. I'm sure Voldemort's daughter is the ultimate Mary Sue on FFN, but your average audience of the play probably doesn't read fanfic. And in a play where parents and children is both the central conflict and the central theme, it only makes sense that our cackling villain is acting out of that same motivation.

Not because I think it's a well-written gem of an addition to HP canon, but because, a bit like going to the cinema, going to the theatre is a fun experience that all by itself improves the quality of whatever you're watching.
Also, I have lot of issues with German theatre culture and I'm already getting a kick out of the idea that it'll see the same success here as it has abroad.no subject
