I thought fandom hated the play for the most part?

It's more mixed than you'd think. It surprises me. What I don't get are the people going "well it's better on stage. It's about the physical effects." That's great. A good play should still have a good plot...

I once saw West Side Story on Broadway on a school trip. The production was amazing, the choreography, acting, and set design were on point--but I still hate the show itself, and it being a very good production didn't change that. So I really don't understand when people say this dumbass play is better in person; I think they're just overexcited and less critical of the plot.

Meanwhile, I cling to the delusional hope that there will come a day when people on the internet will realise that stories written for the stage work under vastly different limits than prose, and that they need to use different tools for getting the similar themes and message across.

Does this mean you like the play?

I haven't seen it and I can't judge it. The thing is, neither can the people moaning about how horrible it is, based on having read the script. /So much/ happens between the words printed on the page and the action realised on the stage. This play has won a lot of high-hanging industry awards for both the technical side of the production and for the acting. I'm assuming that even if the plot is silly, it's a solid piece of theatre.

Might I suggest that people who got into the fandom by reading books, and primarily interacted with the fandom by reading books, are probably less interested in whether the production and acting are good or bad?

Obviously. My point is just that judging a stage production by its script is less helpful than judging a song by its sheet music. Even if we weren't talking two entirely different media, we'd still be discussing two vastly different text genres that are hopeless to compare. People who want to judge the plot of a play should do so in comparison to /other plays/, not a series of novels.

Okay, but it's still a sequel to another work. The story itself made no sense, regardless of formats.

I understand limits, but the basic plot has to work, regardless of form. Did you read the play?

I read it, but more out of curiosity canon investment; I was a very casual Potter reader back in the day, and never in the fandom. And from my view, the story worked fine. Is it /profound/? No, but god knows HP never was. It's silly but it's got a heart, and from what I hear, that hearts really comes across on stage.

And from not-a-superfan, but from someone who likes the theatre, it bears repeating: a stage play /has to/ be simpler and denser than a novel. It /has/ to emphasise different aspects, it /has/ to use different storytelling tools for making the same point. I'm sure Voldemort's daughter is the ultimate Mary Sue on FFN, but your average audience of the play probably doesn't read fanfic. And in a play where parents and children is both the central conflict and the central theme, it only makes sense that our cackling villain is acting out of that same motivation.

Nahh, I'm pretty sure people have more issue with Voldemort having a secret "dark'ness dementia raven way" daughter with Belatrix or Harry saying he wish he never had a son and a bunch of others things that irk people no matter how nicely you package it.

Honestly, I'm mostly excited that Germany is getting something for a change.

All things considered, I might go and see it. Not because I think it's a well-written gem of an addition to HP canon, but because, a bit like going to the cinema, going to the theatre is a fun experience that all by itself improves the quality of whatever you're watching. Also, I have lot of issues with German theatre culture and I'm already getting a kick out of the idea that it'll see the same success here as it has abroad.

Eh. I think the Frozen show looks super bad, like they got their summer interns to do the job bc it was gonna do gangbusters anyway.
