Most hated minigames/sidequests

[personal profile] syncing_feeling 2018-07-16 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
My partner is doing his first run of Final Fantasy X, and even all my complaining about how terrible the Blitzball minigame is didn't quite prepare him for it. He lost 1-0 and is very salty right now. I would rather do the lightning dodging or the chocobo races again than ever have to play one more goddamn Blitzball game.

Which minigames or sidequests make you rage? Bonus points if they're mandatory.

Dragon Age: Origins, the very long and very tedious Fade section in the Circle Tower quest. There's just so much back and forth and 'how does this portal work' and 'what shape do I need to transform into now' and it's just... so fucking tedious.

I haven't played Origins in years but I just got a whiff of horrible memories of that bit. Did you have to shapeshift into a mouse thing and run around trying to find your party? Ugh.

Yeah, that's the one.

I liked some of it. Getting to fight as a mage when I played a rogue was kinda cool. Especially as I played on easy, so it was harder to screw up. I absolutely hated the mouse parts and figuring out portal doors, though!

The ice cream minigame in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep is the absolute worst. You have to pass it in order to proceed through Ventus' storyline and I've only ever managed to beat it once through sheer dumb luck after like 15 failed attempts. Yes, I suck.

I wouldn't hate it if you the "pass" wasn't "literally hit every note"

Dunno if this counts: The Star Fox Adventures "Test of Fear" sucks.

Kabu, a mini-game from Suikoden 3 - Semi-mandatory. You need to win this card game to recruit a complete asshole named Mike. You technically don't need him unless you want the complete ending, where you get to play the side of the enemy. (The card game plays like Hearts, except with spades, and only 2 players. Fuck Mike.)

Ritapon, a mini-game from Suikoden 4 - Definitely mandatory if you want to recruit all 108 stars. Kind of like a mahjongg style game, but damn, it's frustrating at times.

Any Suikoden recruit that requires an open slot in your party. You could be fighting monsters for hours with one less person. On the other hand, you might gain levels and skill points at the end of it.

oh my gooooodddd I had blocked out how bad Kabu was. For me in 3 the worst is the duel against Guillaume. he's not a fighter character and yet you have to duel him?? It made zero sense, since all the other characters you duel against ever are all party fighters.

and see I got addicted to Ritapon even though she fucking kicked my ass so much and I lost so much betting on it. I found the top mini-game much more pointless, even though it wasn't as sucky as trying to win either Mike's card game or Linfa's in V. I think I just...recruited Mike and then never touched his game ever again.

Oh, I definitely wasted some time on Ritapon after recruiting, but that was my choice. With Mike's game, there were times I'd be wasting a solid hour trying to win. THAT was frustrating when I was trying to recruit Mike. I absolutely dropped the game after that.
