Not OP, but no? Her canon appearance can be interpreted however people want. Fanartists who draw her looking totally different are replacing her canon appearance, not interpreting it.

Where is the contradiction in "People are free to invent any origin they want for her skin tone (even no explanation at all), but they aren't free to change it"?
