anime characters always look to me like they don't have any specific ethnicity.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-17 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure there's an actual term for this but I can't for the life of me remember what it is.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree.

""anti anti wanker who things caring about diversity and representation is for whiny millennial babies""

I have never seen someone who calls them-self an anti-anti say this? Anti-SJW maybe because frankly assholes frankly own that label nowadays. But Anti-antis from what I've seen are basically just against hate brigading over moralistic shippers.

I think the distinction between 'anti-anti' and 'anti-SJW' is extremely thin and difficult to maintain in practice, and I'm not sure if it exists at all.

However much you might want it to.

I don't know because some anti-antis are clearly on the SJW side of the fence. So an easy distinction to make:

1. Runs a sideblog dedicated to naming and shaming antis? Anti-anti.
2. Runs a sideblog dedicated to naming and shaming SJWs? Anti-SJW.

"Runs a sideblog dedicated to naming and shaming antis?"

I've seen more blogs trying to warn people about antis that are wishing death on people and purposefully trigger and warnings about one who's a catfisher who's actually raped someone, as well as antis who make servers that show minors cp and get minors to try and catch people antis consider predators doing something predatory

But hey. Those poor poor antis amiright?

*moralistic shipping.

Also NAYRT I love how you think you're getting me there. But I've been following like 5 different anti-anti/proshipper blogs. And all of them care about diversity and representation a lot

I'm not trying to get anyone, I'm just saying what my general experience has been.

"I just like that people can see her however they want."

"It bothers me deeply when she's made pale by fanartists."

...you do see how those two statements are contradictory, right?
erinptah: Human Luna (sailor moon)

[personal profile] erinptah 2018-07-17 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but no? Her canon appearance can be interpreted however people want. Fanartists who draw her looking totally different are replacing her canon appearance, not interpreting it.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-17 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Where is the contradiction in "People are free to invent any origin they want for her skin tone (even no explanation at all), but they aren't free to change it"?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-17 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Jeez, how pale are the OTHER characters if this chick is considered dark-skinned?

I mean, I'm all with you for letting people think someone is whatever ethnicity they want (if the setting allows for it, like I'm gonna side eye someone calling a character white when the setting is very obviously Japan, etc), but I would have assumed this woman was hella white.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-17 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
They're hella pale, anon. I think she's the only character on the whole show who doesn't have pale skin.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-17 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
What show is it? I'm getting a very nineties Sailor Moon vibe from the art style.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-17 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Sailor Moon Crystal. The character's Sailor Pluto/Setsuna Meioh.

Right!? I was so confused when I read this. Even checked the colors on my monitor. She's paler than me, and they call me Marshmallow.

She's more obviously tan-skinned in other versions of Sailor Moon, even when she's not standing next to other characters for comparison. Crystal seems to have made everything paler. (Whole lotta brunette characters suddenly blonde.)

This is how she is drawn in the manga compared to the other characters. For the life of me I can’t figure out why they color her so pale in official media when that is how she looks in the black and white.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-17 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
She can be any ethnicity that has green hair and red eyes.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-17 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Setsuna's skin tone (which is lighter than normal in the image you used - I'm talking about her actual darker tone that appears in most images) is relatively normal for a 100% Japanese person. The "normal" skin tone in Japan is actually way more varied than you tend to see in anime, especially when you account for region.

I think Setsuna was designed as darker-skinned to show that she's "different" from the others, but not different as in ethnically. Still, in the real world someone with her skin tone would not look out of place in Japan (provided the rest of her features were typical East Asian) and I think speculations about her ethnicity are made by people who aren't aware of that.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-17 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's easy to peg her as Ryukyuan or so.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-18 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just puzzled at the idea of a dark-skinned Roma character in Japan. Is that even a thing? Why not an Okinawan character?
