This whole controversy has been amazingly stupid from the first that I heard about it. It seems pretty silly to fire a guy over tweets that he already apologized for 6 years ago, but whatever, I guess

In a dream world, they'd replace him with Edgar Wright, but that's obviously not going to happen, so w/e

Also, he is a Troma guy. That is sort of their thing. People are idiots.

In the quest for awareness and stopping shitty behavior, we've gotten hypersensitive to everything.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we're talking in the age of #metoo, but I think we also have to recognize whether or not we've gone too far.

To be clear, this was organized by alt-right types, not a #metoo situation or anything of the kind.

Dude, his posts were sexualizing little boys. That's not "hypersensitivity" How the fuck is that "too far"?

No comment on this individual circumstance but overall I think call-out culture is horrible

look, i have issues with call-out culture as well, but there's a difference between ganging up on a teenager over a fat joke and... a 40-something year old man making jokes about molesting kids.

for reference, here's one of the tweets, cw for aforementioned reasons.

To be clear about what the joke is, the joke is from when RTs could only be done manually, so people would 'goof' each other by attributing terrible sentiments to people using manual RTs.

You can still argue that the joke is in bad taste, but that's what's going on there.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-20 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
do you want to explain the dozens of other pedo jokes he made as well, or can we just agree that this type of thing, posted repeatedly, by someone who is not a dumb teenager but a grown adult, shouldn't be considered acceptable and deserves a reaction?

i get that he apologised, but, y'know, an apology isn't a magic blanket fix – sometimes when you play stupid games, you win more stupid prizes than you originally thought you might.

All I did was comment on the specific example that you yourself chose to post.

I'm not saying that his humor was necessarily in good taste, I think it deserved an apology (and it got one, six years ago). I'm not sure that firing him was a proportionate response - and if it is a proportional response, I think there ought to be some questions about why Disney hired him for it in the first place.

Yeah, but when you apologize to the company you're working for, and they accept it, it's kind of bullshit that years later they take it back because some jackhole on the internet pulled the receipts on him.
