It's not so much that I expect the Weasleys to be a perfect family, because I don't. I just don't understand all of these "gee, I wish I was a Weasley" secrets. Ron doesn't enjoy being a part of such a big family, even though he loves all of his siblings. It's not a matter of them not loving each other.

But people glorify it to the point of forgetting its faults. In my opinion the twins pretty much run the family, and the force of their personalities on their younger siblings is really significant. Ron and Ginny both treat Percy badly mostly because of the twins, and the approval of the twins is far more important to them than the approval of their parents or anyone else in the family.

Even though Percy shows more concern toward both Ron and Ginny in terms of their safety and wellbeing than the twins, he gets treated like an outsider and while he did have a part in his estrangement from the family as someone else pointed out, there should never be a point in which a child feels like they aren't a part of their family. He seems to feel that from long before actually leaving. Molly is practically the only one who really treats him well. That is one of the big reasons that I think it's misplaced for people to glorify the Weasleys and think they're perfect, which is sadly very common.

Percy doesn't even tell his brothers when he has a girlfriend because he knows how "hilarious" they'll find it that someone "like him" actually got a girlfriend. Because what it comes down to is that the Weasleys are just like the Black family in insisting that they all fit a certain profile. While Percy isn't formally disowned at all, he does have to practically grovel to them to be finally accepted again. It isn't like he joined the Death Eaters, all he did was mistake his government for being trustworthy.

Personally I think it's absurd that people could want to be a part of a family that has such a negative attitude about "nerds" like Percy. Particularly since the majority of people involved enough in fandom to post in a place like fandom_secrets are hardly the ones that the twins & co would be treating nicely. I think most of us would end up being the Percy of that family dynamic, and no, I don't think that's a sign of a balanced or healthy family.

Didn't you see that a good number of people agree with you. You are not saying anything that no one has read before, or anything that will change anyone's mind.

I swear people take the Weasleys teasing and loudness so seriously. And to think a lot of these very people are the first to defend Snape and his bullying ass and tout the Malfoys as the one ideal family in the HP books.

Yeah, but a lot of people glorify it while including the flaws, as well. Families tease each other, it's one of the main ways to show affection. When a sibling gets a girlfriend or boyfriend, they get teased for it. That's all there is to it. If Fred had gotten a girlfriend, he would've gotten hell from George. If Ron had gotten a girlfriend before the death of Fred, the twins would've mocked him, too. Ginny got special treatment, in a way, because she was the only girl, so instead the boys got a bit over-protective, instead of teasing.

Being a nerd gets a negitive attitude in pretty much any family, not just the Weasleys. Outside of the family, too, with everyone else. It'd be weird if they weren't. XD

Also, every family has their black sheep. Percy didn't quite fit in with the rest of them, but that's what made them realistic. He searched to find something that would accept him better (IE, the Government), but he realized the error of his ways and went back, where he was readily accepted. You seem to be forgetting that part.

Personally, being a lonely only child, I'd kill for a family like the Weasleys, simply so that my house wouldn't be as unbelivably boring. I'm used to getting teased and ignored by my friends and cousins. ...and my dad mocks me all the time, come to think of it. XD (It's only fair, I mock him, too. Haha.) All that crap is what makes a family a family.

Speaking as someone from a medium-sized family (four kids), teasing is not a sign of affection; it's a sign of repressed aggression. It's a way to show dominance. People who claim it's a sign of affection are either slightly sadistic and really do want to hurt the ones they love, or (far more often) are fooling themselves.

Well then I suppose everyone in my extended family hates each other! Not to mention my best friend, who is the oldest of five, must really hate her brothers, and vice versa, despite the love they have show for each other when it's important.

Maybe you come from a different kind of family, but what I've seen? That's not the way of it at all.

And what about your friends? You're saying you've NEVER teased your friends for something like who they have a crush on or for crying at a movie? Maybe I'm just a bitch who finds no one but other bitches to hang out with, but I really think that's weird. oO;

I think seriously that the thing about the Weasleys (or whoever) is that different people come from different families and have different temperments and are going to react accordingly. I think the Weasleys fall well within the limits of healthy family. But I would never want to be one of them. I think the Twins are mean to Percy (and it reads to me like Percy feels that way too), but I know that other people don't. The problems they have all seem realistic though--there are no really perfect families in the Potterverse. They all show people hurting each other or dominating each other in some way imo.
