There is no way to fully protect against STDs. A lot of women who work in the sex industry are forced into it by a partner or for financial reasons. These places often are not regulated but the women are too afraid of losing their job to speak out. Many men who pay for sex treat women roughly. The inside of a human body should not be a workplace.

I agree that these are issues, but I don't think any of them is an intrinsic issue - they're abuses that should be curbed.

The inside of a human body should not be a workplace.

Why?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Exploitation is too widespread to "curb":

- 1 in 7 prostitutes in Europe are victims of trafficking.
- 70-90% were forced in prostitution by criminal groups.

As for the human body, in sex work you can't fully protect against STDs (some causing pain, infertility, death), women can have vaginal tears and bruised cervices, men and women have have anal tears. Women can die or have long-term effects from surrogate pregnancy. Women selling eggs can lose one or both ovaries.

The vast majority of the time it's exploiting people who have nothing else give and so are forced to take these risks, if they are not forced into it.

What does this mean? Like, what specifically makes it un-curbable? Organized crime is embedded in it right now, so therefore it can't be changed?

There are plenty of jobs that entail risk of serious injury, I don't think this is unique to prostitution.

I agree, that's bad and it should be stopped, but - as I've said - I don't think it's intrinsic to prostitution as such.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You keep skimming over the STD thing, huh?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
No, I see it, I just don't think it's insurmountable the way that you seem to. You can't 100% protect against it, but you can significantly limit the risk. And more importantly, the risk is one that people choose to take on all the time. I don't see what makes STDs such a special risk that we have to legally bar people from having sex for money to save them from taking the risk.

I would also support the strongest possible laws to eliminate trafficking and ensure that no one is involved in sex work against their will. I don't think that requires outlawing sex work.

Prostitution is a form of slavery.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
OK, what does that mean?

Are you talking about women who are trafficked and forced to engage in prostitution? Because yes, I agree, that's bad. I don't think it's an argument against prostitution as such, and I don't think that it's prudent or just to outlaw prostitution to combat trafficking.

Or are you saying that prostitution is intrinsically a form of slavery? Because if that's what you mean then I'm pretty baffled by how that's true

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
"What does this mean?"

Stop acting as if you're retarded. It means human trafficking. It means slavery. It means violent gang rapes. What the fuck is wrong with you?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
My question is not what "exploitation" means, my question is what "too widespread to curb" means.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Stop acting as if AYRT just ran over your cat and posted it on Facebook with a dozen amused hashtags. All AYRT did was ask a simple question, politely. If you can't answer it in a respectful manner, without insulting someone else, then take your shit and go back under the bridge with the other trolls. What the fuck is wrong with you?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
If you really have to ask "why" to that statement you have lost all credibility in caring about human welfare or personhood. Just so we're clear.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
How so?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Questions to ponder while you sit beneath your bridge.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, all I can say is that I'm not trolling

I have unfortunate news for you about waged labour.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Waged labour works under government regulations about safety. These do not exist in prostitution. There is a huge difference between working a regular job out of financial need and working in prostitution out of financial need.

Right, absolutely, so let's get some safety regulations for prostitution into place.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Impossible. You can't fully protect against STDs. Prostitution would never pass the current health and safety laws.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it actually true that you would need to be able to fully protect against STDs to be able to pass the current health and safety laws?

You've clearly never worked in the gig economy.

But anyway that's why sex work needs to be decriminalized and sex workers need to be unionized.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
And you've clearly never worked in prostitution if you are this naive...

"The inside of a human body should not be a workplace"
Dentists and surgeons say hi.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Because that is exactly equivalent, sure. All you smart-alec 'sex positive' claimants need to start relabelling yourselves accurately as "abuse-positive"

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
Facepalming hard right now.
