Mini rant - really annoying things on tv/movies

[personal profile] tabaqui 2018-07-22 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've been hopping around watching various tv shows/movies lately, online, and I'm seeing *a lot* of one thing that just grinds my gears *so much* - especially if the show is set in 'modern' times.

A woman going to her car in the dark/in a creepy place/in a deserted place/in a dangerous place and she's all 'tra la!' and DOES NOT HAVE HER KEYS IN HER HAND.
I honestly and literally do not know a *single woman* who walks to her car with her keys in the bottom of her insanely full and huge bag, so that she has to stand there fumbling and digging for three minutes before she can get into her car.
ARGH.

Well... the place I live in is neither haunted (so not creepy) nor dangerous, so... yeah I pretty much tra la la to my car? Heck, I walk to work when I am on nightshift so... am I an anomaly?

I suppose?
Like i said - not one woman I know of does that. ESPECIALLY if they're in the stupid tv/movie trope of dark/deserted/scary place.

I live in a pretty safe area, but I still walk to my car with my keys in my hand. I used to live in a sketchy area when I was younger, so it might be a habit from back then (you really wouldn't want to stand in front of your car fumbling for your keys there). However, I have a friend who grew up in a really safe town and she never walks with her keys in hand. She always has to look for them in her bag and waiting for her to find them makes me really anxious.

I don't think that's so strange. Unless there's a specific reason you need to be looking over your shoulder but are just ignoring it.

Does the place where you live also have zero violent crime?

I mean, I guess no more or less than any big city? Like my actual neighbourhood is pretty safe, but there was that guy in the van that ran over all those people and that was like... a few blocks away?

Believe it or not, there are a heck of a lot of places that don't really have violent crime. It was a well-known fact in the town where I went to college that if you got stranded after the trains stopped running, you could just call the local police and they'd give you a ride to campus because they didn't have anything better to do. I would frequently walk into town to the 24-hour Dunkin Donuts at 2 AM if I was pulling an all-nighter and wanted coffee. Everyone did it and no one thought anything of it because there was no reason to be concerned.

If I'm leaving from home or work, I always have my keys in my hand because I never keep them in my purse at home or my office, thus I never have to dig them out. In other situations, it's a different story. If I'm wearing something with pockets, my keys go in a pocket so if my purse gets snatched at least I can still get into my car or home and the thief doesn't have that ability. No pockets (lol women's clothes) then there is a fair chance I will be rooting for my keys. I try to always put them in a certain small pocket in my purse so they're easy to grab. I forget a lot, though. Still, depending on weather, time of day, and where I am, I usually fish out my keys before walking to my car. It's not even so much a safety measure as just convenience. Better to do the rooting around in a well-lit, climate controlled (it's hard to root through your purse with thick gloves on) space where I'm not getting rained on.

Yeah if I ever have my keys out its because of convenience, to be honest. Not for protection.

I don't drive, but I live on what's usually referred to as a "rough" or "dodgy" street and my keys are always in my hand waaay before I get to the front door.

Yes! Oh, and that's another thing - going to their front door or whatever and standing on the stoop fumbling for keys.

I know it's the lazy writer's way of making tension happen/giving the serial killer or werewolf or whatever time to leap on the 'victim', but it is so infuriating.

That normally doesn't bother me, because there are a LOT of people irl who have the self-preservation instincts of a fucking slug and wouldn't notice if they strolled right past a squad of blood covered murder-clowns on their way to their car.

But when they spend five minutes digging through their comically large purse, and then drop their keys on the ground just to prolong the tension.... that's when I get annoyed.

EXACTLY.

Yeah, I always have my keys out and ready so I don't stand there fumbling around in my purse. I do that in broad daylight in a busy place, too.

Guess I'm jacking your thread, but one thing I don't care for anymore is when everything must be done in the nick of time/literally the last second.

Saving the person/neighborhood/city/country/planet/universe, winning the game, obtaining the thing that has great significance, sending the code, thwarting the enemy, blowing up the headquarters, stopping the flight, stopping the wedding (especially in the middle of "I do"), entering the contest during the final tally (and winning), ordering a stay of execution when the fucker is already strapped to the chair, and so on and so forth.

Just stop. Or at least let it backfire more often, I dunno. It would probably fuck up a lot of movies though, lol.

HA, yes. That is amazingly annoying. Especially when they did *not* have to wait to the last damn second. And most particularly when it's not remotely realistic; a huge door is closing and they're doing whatever and they keep showing the door closing at a speed which means it would be *shut already*, or only open an inch or so but when they finally manage to get to it, there's enough room to get through.

Grrr.

Ha! I knew I forgot one.

Similarly, this annoyed me so much about The Day After Tomorrow. They *just* manage to leave a boat crawling with wild animals and run across the street to the library to get to the room with the fireplace while carrying the dude with the bad leg, literally 30 seconds after observing that the worst of the storm had arrived? Really? At the rate the storm was moving, they would have been frozen long before they reached that room, especially if it were on a different floor, in a building that had no power at that point.

YES!! Omg.

Which leads to the *really* annoying 'injury that's just bad enough to make someone limp/wonky, but not so bad that they can't put on a burst of speed at the last second'. And/or 'injury that incapacitates but some whiskey and a grubby t-shirt bandage and we're good to go'.

Just stoppit.

I'll always appreciate the first Shrek movie for lampshading and subverting the "I do" part.

murder mysteries where Person Who Didn't Do It finds the dead body and IMMEDIATELY picks up the bloody knife/smoking gun and just stands there like a big fucking idiot waiting for the cops/angry mob.

HOMG, yes, this. SO IRRITATING.

And - along those same lines - someone does something stupid/is attacked by a monster and dies, and their friends are all 'no, we can't call the cops!!!!' when - holy god, you really think inexpertly burying a body is *less* suspicious?!

honestly, I can totally see myself doing that
