Why would having the correct accent be detrimental to the story?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Because we would have tremendous trouble understanding it.

Sorry, I wasn't meaning a medieval accent, as none of the people speak medieval English in films either for that reason. I was wondering why it would be detrimental to the story if her accent were modern French vs Scots?

But neither option is historically accurate.

But one is slightly less inaccurate than the other, is what ayrt's point is, I suspect. Otherwise why not just have everyone speaking in a Texas twang? Or perhaps a valley girl California accent? Or ooh, how about Mary Queen of Scots, Fargo-style?

I find it weird, this implication that accents are all or nothing.

I don't think either of them would be less inaccurate, I think they'd be pretty much equally inaccurate.

Otherwise why not just have everyone speaking in a Texas twang? Or perhaps a valley girl California accent? Or ooh, how about Mary Queen of Scots, Fargo-style?

There's no intrinsic reason that you shouldn't do any of those things, it's a stylistic choice.

Because given the choice between two anachronistic accents, choosing the one that viewers will more readily link with her best-known historical association makes more narrative sense.

EXACTLY. It's... really weird how some people are acting like you only have two choices, go full historical accuracy or do whatever you want no matter how anachronistic it is. There's a lot of middle ground, folks.
