Food! Food! Food!

Talk about food. Whatever food talk you want.

Looking for a good hand pie recipe.

Particularly a dough that you have used that has worked great. I want to get into making both sweet and savory ones.

Trader Joe makes an excellent frozen pie crust.

Sadly, I have none around me so will have to make it by hand. :(

I was sitting here thinking "What the hell is a hand pie?" I need a brain.

To be slightly more helpful, I used to make pie in a yeast crust. It made sort of freeform pie I would bake on a cookie sheet. It was less tricky to work with than a regular crust and worked well for sweet and savory pies. I don't have the recipe anymore unfortunately (I got it out of the Vegetarian Times many many years ago) but I'm sure there are still recipes out there.

Potluck

What is a good savory food I can make that can feed a lot of people and is a snack type?

Depends a little bit on what you define as a "snack", but I would go with either pasta salad, or a dip of some kind - whether that's hummus, salsa, guacamaole, buffalo chicken dip, seven layer dip - with chips or bread

Something that can be piled on with lots of other small foods. Preferably heated.

Hmmmmm. Chilaquiles? Mac n cheese? Some kind of stew, like chili verde or something like that?

Various types of dip, probably - cheese balls/spreads, bean dip, hummus, spinach dip, artichoke dip, etc. Combine it with good Tortilla chips, pita chips and crackers.

Pureeing root vegetables?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Puree has to be smooth and the machine can't be my arm because I am weak. What machine am I looking for? A blender, food processor? Is there a difference? How did I get to be nearly 30 and not know this basic adult thing?

Food processor is probably better, I think? There's not much difference but I feel like food processors are generally better for big, bulky solids, and blenders are better for softer/more liquid stuff

Thank you! It's hard to figure that out from the info on the site that sells them because they all say they do everything. I remember having to add water to the blender to make fruit smoothies but I haven't used one in years.

The other advantage is that food processors often have a bunch of different attachments that you can use to do things like knead bread or whip things that you wouldn't be able to do with a blender

But that's not so relevant with what you're trying to do

A stick blender is also an option. They're so much easier to clean and you can use them in the same pot you cooked the vegetables in. Stick blenders are also very good for making soups for the same reason.
