Also, it's hard to think of ships like OP's talking about that are actually popular outside of a handful of people - maybe I'm forgetting some, tho

I think lots of ships start out like this. A new character is announced or shows up in a few episodes and everyone is speculating and writing ship fic before the character is fully fleshed out in the canon yet, then things get shorn up or jossed depending on what happens

I guess maybe Overwatch fandom might have some of these?

But tbh a lot of the ships in that fandom come off as very 'slap two random people together', which is fine, but would be a strange thing to complain about a certain subset of shippers engaging in the same behaviour as everyone else.

Otherwise, yeah. Most f/f ships in the fandoms I frequent(outside of the Big f/f ships I like) are tiny and shipped by a few dozen people, many of whom are wlw themselves. Or at least that's been my experience, so anecdotal data and all that.

And most of the Big Ships I can think of are either canon romantic or very clearly important to each other in canon

IDK, maybe it's anime fandom, I don't pay attention to those guys

Yeah, they're hardly out of nowhere or illogical.

Could be, I don't frequent anime corners either so maybe it's more a thing there? Either way I still don't see it as an issue.

This has been my experience so far too.

And like others have said, this isn’t exclusive to f/f ships so I don’t get why OP is so bothered by it.

Yeah it's not unique to f/f on any level. It's kind of just a general fandom thing so idk why anyone would be bothered by it either.
