I mean there's lots of m/m shipping like this too so I don't really get the issue?

Sometimes people just wanna shove two characters together because they're pretty and that's all there is to it, no harm in that.

(If we're talking about people who do this and then claim that they're some kind of Amazing Social Activist, then yeah they're annoying, but again: I've seen this behaviour from m/m shippers as well, it's not unique to f/f).

There's also the issue that in some fandoms there's few female characters to choose from and most of them never interact, so any of the f/f ships are gonna seem pretty random and out-there.

Also, it's hard to think of ships like OP's talking about that are actually popular outside of a handful of people - maybe I'm forgetting some, tho

I think lots of ships start out like this. A new character is announced or shows up in a few episodes and everyone is speculating and writing ship fic before the character is fully fleshed out in the canon yet, then things get shorn up or jossed depending on what happens

I guess maybe Overwatch fandom might have some of these?

But tbh a lot of the ships in that fandom come off as very 'slap two random people together', which is fine, but would be a strange thing to complain about a certain subset of shippers engaging in the same behaviour as everyone else.

Otherwise, yeah. Most f/f ships in the fandoms I frequent(outside of the Big f/f ships I like) are tiny and shipped by a few dozen people, many of whom are wlw themselves. Or at least that's been my experience, so anecdotal data and all that.

And most of the Big Ships I can think of are either canon romantic or very clearly important to each other in canon

IDK, maybe it's anime fandom, I don't pay attention to those guys

Yeah, they're hardly out of nowhere or illogical.

Could be, I don't frequent anime corners either so maybe it's more a thing there? Either way I still don't see it as an issue.

This has been my experience so far too.

And like others have said, this isn’t exclusive to f/f ships so I don’t get why OP is so bothered by it.

Yeah it's not unique to f/f on any level. It's kind of just a general fandom thing so idk why anyone would be bothered by it either.

I've seen it argued on ontd and tumblr that het ships are now more woke, apparently m/m and f/f is 'fetishistic' and down to internalized misogyny, while het is 'female representation.' We're truly living in a golden age, people!

(Anonymous) 2018-07-29 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I've seen recognition that the same fetishistic elements that have always been present in f/f porn that's clearly made for heterosexual men are also commonly present in slash that is clearly written by and catering to straight women. The only people I've seen claiming that this means that het must be more woke now are fangirls who can't deal with criticism of the genre and are butthurt that no one's giving them ally brownie points for their Stucky fics anymore.

DA

This is a stupid comment

I'm a member of the LGBT+ community and a former femslasher. I still dabble in f/f a bit but it's gotten so toxic I won't go in until I can completely vet that the fandom isn't filled with noxious people. I think a lot of it comes with this weird vibe from the lesbian community on tumblr right now. (Largely due to it being infiltrated by TERFs, so TERF discourse is rampant even when the people you're interacting with aren't.)

In this hypothetical case, the M/M and M/F shippers are just having fun and being silly. But so many of the F/F shippers take crack pairings and make themselves out to be victims. "If you don't ship these two pure lesbians (who have never spoken to each other ever) then you are a bigot and hate lesbians" "These two girls are lesbians." "They haven't even met, how can you tell what their sexuality is?" "Why do you hate lesbians so much? People never let us have anything! Obviously from their eye contact you can see they're LESBIANS! Screw you, you cishet!"

Compare to say the m/m shipper who is just making their content and having fun. This isn't to say that m/m or f/m ships don't have their overinvested fans who cause drama. It's just the femslash fandom around a lot of spaces has completely changed to be extremely aggro. All female characters must be lesbians, even if they have boyfriends or husbands. Bi headcanons are deemed disgusting, if you disagree with them you personally hate lesbians. If you even gently question them, then you are disgusting. They send hate to people and try and latch onto any female character. Even if there's only one female character in the series and she's married, she's a lesbian and if you disagree...well, you get the idea.

And yes, not all of the f/f fandom is like this. But a lot of the younger crowd is, and it makes fandoming completely exhausting.
