Re: AGHH! Things in fandom that annoy you

I got into a new ship and it's pretty popular, but the quality is lacking. I think solely because it's a het ship. I haven't found anything I love and all the things I like about the pairing in canon are just not mentioned much or at all in the fandom space. Fandom likes to cast the man as some kind of aggressive, dominant romance novel manly dude type, and the woman as a helpless submissive damsel in distress, and most of the fic is like bad chick lit. I'm not digging it. I like the canon characterisation and I want to read fic that isn't the actual plot from a trashy romance novel with the names changed. I think this is why I never really get into the fandom for all the het pairings I like.

Which pairing? A lot of the fic in my main fandoms is like that, and I’ll read it occasionally if the premise is interesting otherwise, but the fics I really enjoy don’t follow the supermarket romance novel template.

Oh gosh I haaaaaaate this and it's so common in so many het ships. Not just common, omnipresent - like it's the only dynamic that people are looking for in het ships. It's a bummer.
