AGHH! Things in fandom that annoy you

(Anonymous) 2018-07-28 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got into a new tiny fandom. Decided to see what fanfic it has. 9 pages worth! I was super excited until I realized of the 171 fics, only 20 are not written by the same person. :/

What things in fandom annoy you?

I just got into a minor pairing that typically shows up as a background pairing in the juggernaut fandom ship. Which is fine, I have no problem with the popular ship. It's just... I also want stories actually focused on the minor couple, not a story where there's a line or two about how "oh yeah, and X & Y are holding hands in the background." At least AO3 has their new filtering system in place so I can cut some of the crap now.

People who comment on a pairing fic that it would have been better if it had been A/C instead of A/B or whatever their pairing of choice is.

I got into a new ship and it's pretty popular, but the quality is lacking. I think solely because it's a het ship. I haven't found anything I love and all the things I like about the pairing in canon are just not mentioned much or at all in the fandom space. Fandom likes to cast the man as some kind of aggressive, dominant romance novel manly dude type, and the woman as a helpless submissive damsel in distress, and most of the fic is like bad chick lit. I'm not digging it. I like the canon characterisation and I want to read fic that isn't the actual plot from a trashy romance novel with the names changed. I think this is why I never really get into the fandom for all the het pairings I like.

Which pairing? A lot of the fic in my main fandoms is like that, and I’ll read it occasionally if the premise is interesting otherwise, but the fics I really enjoy don’t follow the supermarket romance novel template.

Oh gosh I haaaaaaate this and it's so common in so many het ships. Not just common, omnipresent - like it's the only dynamic that people are looking for in het ships. It's a bummer.

said this before here a bunch of times, fangirls who are openly rude to the wife or girlfriend of the male celebrity they have a crush on. It's stupid and certainly won't score you any points with him.

I hate that shit. What the fuck do they think is going to happen when they insult their crush's SO?

Don't you know that trashing a celeb's taste in women/men will automatically endear the fan to the celeb? It's in the psycho douchebag's handbook!

Oh yes, this is absolutely cringey.

This one het pairing I ship has/had (they seem to have quieted down which thank fuck) tinhatters for the actors who play them, and both their spouses had to deal with that kind of bullshit.

of course now I wanna know who this is you're talking about

AYRT—I’m a Rumbelle shipper and Robert Carlyle and Emilie de Ravin are both married and have kids, but not to or with each other, much to the dismay of tinhatters.

I remember wanting to reach through a screen and punch the person who congratulated de Ravin and her husband on her new baby having Carlyle’s nose, and the people who spread rumors that Carlyle’s wife was rude (to them? Gee, I wonder why?) and asked him when he would leave “the dragon,” aka his wife, for his costar. And one year when they were both at SDCC, someone was spreading rumors that they shared a hotel room. Carlyle’s wife and kids were with him at the con, but facts didn’t matter in the face of their epic twu wuv.

3k essays thoroughly analysing every new episode and explaining the subtext/symbolism/metaphors of a work that is obviously not trying to be clever. Sorry, dude, but your favourite anime is extremely unlikely to be making deliberate use of western colour symbolism to make the antagonist's dressing gown a commentary on his relationship to the hero.

Oh gosh, totally agree.

Massive essays full of 'evidence' about why a certain ship is going to be canon, or just explaining why you should ship it. I don't fucking CARE what's going to be canon! I just ship things that are cute, that's literally the only reason you need to ship things!

Those essays are so weird and sometimes, they're seeing stuff that's not even there.

This is the main reason Im quiet about shipping Reylo. JFC some of them are completely batshit.

I finally watched the Last Jedi and I have to admit I kind of came out of it shipping them too.

Any good fic recs?

I really love ship manifestos, but only if they're divorced from canon

If someone is actually serious about trying to convince people that their ship is objectively right, that's just excruciating. I just want to read about what you like about the ship.

nyart

+1, especially if the manifesto is more about why character X is a bad fit for Y than why Y/Z is a good ship. (And that's assuming they're not outright bashing X.)

Just a tiny one.

One of my fandoms has a lot of different pairing weeks and weekends that a lot of writers participate in, which is actually really nice. And each day will have a theme, which is fine. And generally, the themes are broad enough that the writers will end up with completely different types of stories, but occasionally, either the theme is narrower or the writers all have pretty similar ideas. Since they are often posted around the same time, sometimes it will feel like I've already read this same story, like, three times today. It's not a big deal and I can see how it happens and I don't want them to stop with the weeks, but it can be a little irritating, though I would never say that to any of the writers.

Ship policing, i.e., how very DARE YOU like a villain ship, it makes you an IRL Nazi.

Ship policing and headcanons/fics that seem more like diversity checklists that the author is only posting because they want the Woke Points and less like something the author has actually thought through in any way. Half the time it seems like the fans who do this don't even know what half the terms mean. It's even worse when they demand that everyone else adhere to these characterizations as well. "Character A is a demi-gender polyamorous pansexual in a relationship with Character B, who is AMAB transfeminine asexual, and Character C, who is an agender furry pan-romantic monosexual, and their relationship is Soft and Pure and Wholesome uwu uwu and if you disagree then you're a bigot and an actual pedophile and should delete yourself."

Okay, so that's an exaggeration, but not by much.

People collecting woke points make me irrationally punchy.
