That's the main point of the film. In fact....spoilers

she leaves behind her wonderful best friends who love her madly and prove it by risking their lives and freedom, all for the Fish dick. She can barely speak to him and knows nothing abt him. It's all about the fish dick.

What a charming, insightful summary.

Definitely consider a career in either film criticism or diplomacy.

DA - Well, I mean...they're not wrong, so...

(Anonymous) 2018-07-29 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrug* "they're not wrong"? Really? "It's all about fish dick"?

As I said elsewhere, you get out a film what you put into it.

So...she didn't put her long-time friends at risk just so she could be with a fish-dude she barely knew but liked to fuck? OK.

Let's not pretend this is some amazing, intelligent insta-classic that some people just don't ~*get*~.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
It did win an Oscar

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
so did suicide squad. What is your point?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
cmon man, Suicide Squad won for Best Makeup and Shape Of Water won Best Picture

that still doesn't prove that it's a good movie by any means, but it does strongly indicate that there is something more going on there than Thirsty For Fish Dick: My True Untold Story

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Her friends helped her because they loved her, and WANTED to help.

DA

To an extent, Yes, but the movie was (imo) more than about thirsty girl gets unknown fishgod D.

If you consider her life, the life if her friends, this is the most daring, most control they have had over their lives, and they all decide to risk. To stand together against the world that has far too long relegated them to the sidelines. (In the least, this isn't even exploring magical realism).

But if all you get from this is The Inverted R Rated Little Mermaid, then cool. Not everyone will take away the same thing away from a film.

She wanted to save his life because he was going to be butchered, and he was an intelligent being whom she loved. It wasn't about being together. I would argue she never even thought it would be possible for them to be together after getting him out to sea... or did you think Elisa knew exactly what would happen at the end there?

THIS!

This was my feeling about the movie, TBH.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hard pressed to imagine how you can miss the actual point harder than to conclude that she barely knew him because they couldn't speak to each other.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
DA but the film did a crap job of humanizing the River God and illustrating why he's worth falling in love with while Elsa sings about her ~deep feelings~ and he's like "egg"

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
DA I remember sitting in the theater thinking 'My DOG knows more words than this fish.'

(not to say I didn't like the movie, but the actual fish fella didn't work for me at all as a romantic interest)

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah you.... you REALLY missed the point of the movie if you could only think about communication in terms of "knowing words."

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Way to be presumptuous. I "get" the move just fine. She was different and he saw something in her and she felt she never fit in the world and the implication she was like him with the gills and the water masterbation etc... I'm talking about in terms of a character he was literally nothing worth falling in love with. No personality. No real humanization. it was about as shallow as twilight and to call it some ooooh great love story is stupid. The dumb raptors from the new JP movies are more humanized than fishdicks and that's sad. Elisa wanted to fuck the fishman go her for following her dreams but let's not pretend the River God was some peak Mr Darcy type shit.
