The creators have called him gay in multiple interviews now, and a writer confirmed that he's only attracted to men.

No. The writers said that he was attracted to men (no 'only' in there) and they specifically said in their interview that they were leaving him open to interpretation so that everyone could feel represented.

Which hasn't stopped the usual fandom police from immediately hopping in to try to boss people around on how they're allowed to ship him. Because representation only applies to who they want it to apply to, not to the open net the writers specifically left there for everyone.

Nope, Lauren actually labeled him as gay.

"Lauren Montgomery: It was exciting. The idea of having this character, who had been so much to so many people. And none of that was based on his sexual orientation,” Montgomery said. “And just to reveal that he is a gay man, and that in no way changes his relationships with any of these people, anything that he’s done. Sometimes it’s amazing to have the stories where the character is finding themselves, but then it’s also incredibly important to have the stories where this character is fully formed, and he’s a gay man, and he’s doing amazing things. And he’s flawed, and he has his own problems. That was why I loved the idea of having Shiro be our representation."

"How long did you both know that Shiro was gay?"
"Joaquim Dos Santos: A very long time."
"Lauren Montgomery: It was something that came up right from the get-go, but as you know, from the beginning we kind of thought we were going to kill Shiro at one point. And so we’re like, ‘Y’know what? We don’t really want to kill off our gay representation. Maybe we’ll find it somewhere else.’ But then we found out pretty soon after that, Shiro wasn’t allowed to die. Well, all right, we go back to plan one and yeah, it just took us a little while to get to the point in the story where we were able to reveal it. But he was kind of always in the works to be our [gay] representation."
"JDS: Stories just get shuffled all the time in the series, so it’s like, that backstory we wanted to tell a story of it earlier, but it just made more sense now."

Straight from the horse's mouth, Shiro is just gay.

Question: And then if you guys know, how do Shiro and Adam identify in their sexuality? Are they gay? Bisexual?…

Lauren: I think we just kinda consider them–

Joaquim: They’re in a relationship. I think that’s where they identify.

Lauren: I think the important thing is maybe allow the fans to see what they want to see. We don’t want to put anyone in the corner so that other people feel that they are not represented.

Joaquim: Just so you know, us confirming or not confirming one way or the other either leads to our twitter being destroyed or [unclear]. And we realize that that’s just passion for the show and for the characters and we appreciate it. We just don’t want anybody to feel like they’re not being represented.

But sure, go with finding the casual use of the word "gay," which can be an umbrella term, as more important than explicit confirmation in another interview that they're keeping it open to interpretation.

That interview came before the ones I posted, dingus. If literally referring to him as gay, rather than any other option, is not enough to convince your deluded brain, I dunno what to tell you.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My interview coming before invalidates it... how, exactly? The writers didn't say "No, we take it back. It's not open to interpretation. He's gay as in explicitly homosexual and would never be interested in a woman."

And since you're obviously the same person as below, here's a secret: I don't ship Shiro with any female characters, never have. But other people did before the staff even said he liked men, and their fun is in fact more important than a fictional character's alleged sexual orientation. If you're one of THOSE who thinks it's the same as saying a real gay person who has confirmed themselves to be gay might not actually be gay, get your ass back to tumblr with the rest of the kids who don't understand how most human beings manage to separate fiction from reality.

Imagine being this desperate to try to prove that you can still ship Shiro with women and have that be okay. Fuck off.

Why wouldn't it be ok? I mean, it's fanfic.

please touch some grass immediately.
