[Brave by Rose McGowan]

I don't think this book was brave at all. I think McGowan came across as a self-serving, conceited hypocrite with little self-awareness.

Also, I was disappointed by the lack of celebrity gossip.

She's just like that, anon. She has been for years. Insufferable and wanky as all hell. Like I'm sorry for the things that happened to her, she didn't deserve that, but she's still an asshole.

One of those classic secrets where the second part of it makes me a little skeptical of the first part of it

Agreed

I'm OP. I'm not sure what you mean by skeptical.

The first part is about her personally - she kept going on and on about how smart, how great, how clever, how artistic, and just generally how amazing of a person she is - and yet somehow she doesn't really seem to realize that this got her nowhere. It came across like a loser bragging about their MENSA-level IQ and expecting you to be impressed.

Or how on one page she dissed Charmed and then on the next page she realized that she might be offending Charmed fans so she backpeddles her opinion. That's not very BRAVE.

She also lies about her background making herself seem like a total Hollywood naif, when in reality due to her father's connections she was modeled for Italian fashion magazines as a child.

As for the celebrity gossip, she barely said anything interesting about the various famous men she was with, and absolutely nothing about Asia Argento, which I thought was a ridiculous omission. It's like she was deliberately painting herself as friendless and having experienced this thing with Harvey Weinstein that nobody else did.

And then at the end she mentions she has a music project and a makeup line coming out, watch for them!!

Ugh.

Do you want to hear more? I've got more.

Honestly I just feel bad for her. She seems like she's got some mental health things going on. And nothing about this changes my mind about that. It sounds really scattered. I hope she gets the help she needs.

I don't know, it just seems like one, the criticisms that you're making of McGowan's character are a lot more serious than not getting enough celebrity gossip. And two, if McGowan's as bad as all that, why would you trust her if she *did* have celebrity gossip? It's a little like... "The food is terrible and the portions are too small", you know? It's confusing what you actually wanted from the book.

I wanted something more insightful and also more dishy. Why choose a celebrity's memoir over the zillions of other abuse memoirs out there otherwise?

I would like to hear more...

Re: OP

She left out her recent marriage and divorce.

She made a reference to dance lessons that came out of nowhere, and it's like, weren't you homeless at that time? But you were also taking dance lessons? And who was paying for them if you were broke?

Maybe her father (despite how poorly he treated her) because he seemed to be a millionaire. He bought a house but it's not clear that he had a job.

She mostly seemed annoyed at Harvey Weinstein's assault because he was so fat and ugly and she found him repulsive. It took her pages and pages until she mentioned - in passing - that this was a man who held professional power over her and he wasn't just some random dude.

Her reaction was to get a lawyer. She said a "criminal" lawyer, which makes no sense, because she wasn't the one who committed the crime. This supposed "criminal" lawyer said she wouldn't win (a lawsuit? not clear) because she'd done love scenes in movies and that meant she wasn't a credible witness. (What????)

She was all upset that nobody would get behind her. But then when the head of her management company told her that he'd back her, suddenly she got cold feet and was like, but what would be in it for me if I did that?

WOW. She didn't report Weinstein to the police. She wouldn't take up this other lawyer's offer of backing because she didn't think it would benefit her enough? And she dares to accuse other people of being complicit? She was complicit too.

Goddamn, do I envy you.

For the record, accusing a rape victim of being complicit because they didn't go to the police is cruel. Rose may have issues, but if you think it's simple to do the right thing and not have your name dragged through the mud, and possibly your entire career torpedoed, then I hope we all one day have your courage.

Did Harvey write the original post?

Because all their posts are victim-blaming garbage.

OP, you are a shitty person. And you should be ashamed of yourself.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2018-07-31 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. If you whine and complain that other women who didn't come forward were complicit while you also didn't come forward at first, you are complicit too by your own logic.

Just stop.

And fucking take some lessons in empathy while you're at it.

Re: OP

Rose has been traumatized and had a hard time of it. And she also seems like an asshole who is constantly lashing out and attacking other people who haven't done enough, or who haven't suffered enough, or whatever. I think she needs some serious serious therapy, and I don't think her book is the place to do it.

So yeah, I understand what you're saying, OP. I haven't read the book, but I've seen the same things cropping up in her interviews.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2018-07-31 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
In the US, getting a "criminal lawyer" just means that you think there might be a criminal case brought against the other person and you want to make sure you're represented. It's pretty common.

Also, I'm kind of disgusted that you're blaming an assault victim for not pressing a case when she's been given professional advice that she's not going to be seen as credible, and then not wanting to drag other people into it.

I do think McGowan has some mental health issues and I hope she gets help, but you seem like a nasty piece of work yourself.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-31 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really why the second part contradicts the first in any way? It's possible to enjoy celebrity gossip and have negative opinions about celebrity authored books.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-31 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
When your negative opinion is that someone is hypocritical and isn't a good enough role model for The Cause, also wanting them to provide dishy gossip makes YOU hypocritical.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
What is this book about?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically Rose McGowan's crazy childhood in a cult, her nonstop abusive Hollywood experience, and how she publicly came out against Harvey Weinstein.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-31 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I feel sorry for her. Not just for what happened with Weinstein, but also because she doesn't seem to have anything else going on in her life to balance out this public campaign.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-31 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I feel sorry for her too. I've known several people like her not celebrities but with abusive childhoods and mental illness and people like that become magnets for abusers because they know they can get away with almost anything because people like her just aren't credible.
